If the engine ecu wasnt registering an overheat of 115c and you saw steam shooting from the expansion tank then the tank was probably empty or the radiator cap experienced a bad pressure balance (dodgy cap)

The cooling system acts as a pressure cooker, if you diagnose it with that in mind you will find your culprit.

Are your hoseclamps original ear type or the jubilee/screw type.

The original ones, they self tension themselves as the hose shrinks in cold weather. But they require the use of an original hose.

At very minimum if you have to use a screw clamp due to any reason e.g. aftermarket hose make sure its a band style which is smooth from the inside (like factory SS clamps on older mercedes, BMW, VW/Audi products)

I like to apply a very thin coat of indian head shellac or hylomar to make sure there is no leak ever. (The pitting you see on old flanges is due to the screw clamp loosening up and allowing liquid to pass through)
