They decided not to subsidide Japanese business on the taxpayer dollar, because cost of logistics is too high, cost of labour is too high and there's no economy of scale. Australia had a local industry and doesn't allow JDMs, but again high cost of labour meant the car companies couldn't keep these plants profitable.
There is no Toyota plant in Adelaide. Toyota's Australian HQ is in Altona, Melbourne and their Asia Pacific Design Centre is based in Notting Hill, also Melbourne.
