Entry level Samsungs are great devices hardware wise when comparing with other brands. If you can find some AOSP ROM for your samsung then they are very good. I have galaxy ace2 in my home for the last two years and I have installed CM11 on it, it runs great although it has only 768MB RAM.
Samsung hardware is durable and quality control is good.

Agreed. Their quality, compliance with international health, safety, environmental standards and other things are significantly better than other cheaper brands. No doubt about their quality.

Samsung is no doubt one of the best, in almost every aspect. I personally prefer Samsung over other brands. Even their latest budget devices are now very optimised for moderately fast performance than their previous devices, but they still need improvement in performance, than can be achieved by having more RAM (1.5 to 2GB), as their SOCs are already great and powerful enough.

However, their 1GB or lower RAM devices for 2016 are overpriced and very much underperforming in performance and multitasking in comparison to competitors in same price. They cannot handle multiple apps running at the same time due to less RAM. Other specs are not a concern, but they should atleast have 1.5GB RAM for sufficiently smooth performance and multitasking. Rooting or custom ROMs help, but most people are not technical enough or do not do that in fear of voiding warranty, though its only temporarily void.

Latest Apps and OS are very much optimised for lower RAM consumption, but 1GB RAM phones cannot handle multiple apps running at the same time, and it kills the background apps repeatedly to free RAM and when you get back to that app, it is already closed by android and then app starts from the scratch (taking more time to open causing slow performance) and you lose your previous progress. This repeated cycle increases CPU load and hence battery consumption.

Performance is the "number 1" issue in budget phones and RAM is the "number 1" factor in determining performance of a budget phone. It is the most important to look for in budget phone. This is why I always keep ranting about it!. I had two Moto G3s, one 1GB RAM and other 2GB RAM and their performance significantly vary, despite of having exact similar specs and features.

Xiaomi redmi 2 prime or Meizu M2. They will be brand new and their performance and other aspects are good too.

That was a comparison between 1 and 2GB RAM performance.

S4 and S5 are still very fast, not very slow or laggy atleast. They are still perfectly usable in terms of performance.

Your S5 is having some phone software, app or hardware issues, that is slowing down the device.

Is it rooted? Is it running latest firmware?.

1GB RAM phones work great on light to normal use with limited number of apps, but when you install too many apps, then they get slow. Most people install too many apps btw.

Samsung now added "app optimisation" (background app management) feature which works exactly like greenify and makes the phone faster. If used properly, it helps a lot in increasing performance. But overall, J2 is much slower than what you can get in same price.

Moreover, J2 has 8GB ROM and you cannot install apps or games directly on MicroSD card, like you can do on your Lenovo A6000.

Samsung Super Amoled panel replacement costs about 7500-12500/- and they did not even protect the display with Gorilla Glass!. J1 Ace, J2, J5 and J7 do not have Gorilla Glass to protect their Super expensive Super Amoled displays!

Even Infinix Zero 2 and Noir Z9 have Gorilla Glass to protect their Super Amoled displays.

I am a fan of Samsung and I own Samsung Galaxy, but i hate these things by Samsung.

Cousin sent them from abroad. They were on sale, so he got them at fairly cheap price. Excellent and highly profitable smartphone. 2GB RAM version is not easily available in Pakistan, but getting 16GB ROM & 2GB RAM version is recommended.

Lol true. My 14000 rupees Qyun Mobile X700i runs smoother than that. Never hangs.

People who complain about flagships like S4 and S5 lagging. Please don't blame everything on the phone, it depends also on your usage and what apps you have installed.
Yes, TouchWiz is a bit laggy with slightly aggressive RAM management but the phone is not to blame for this.

I know of many people who own the previous gen flagships and have apps like the following installed on them:
-Memory Booster
-Performance Booster
-App/Task Killers
-Battery Saver
-Clean Master

These types of apps are the main causes of lags, and those 1-2 seconds wait when opening apps. These apps basically kill all processes as soon as you leave them, free-ing up more RAM but slowing everything down since all processes have been killed and need to open-up and restart themselves. Constantly running applications do this, such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Snapchat, Viber and many more.
Battery savers do the same, however they try to stop the apps from starting after being shut, but since this isn't possible without root access, battery savers and performance boosters basically perform the same task, killing processes and trying to stop them from restarting.
Clean Master is something I have seen on all my friends' phones. It clears cache, kills apps, background processes and much more. This greatly affects the responsiveness of the device.

What I can recommend:
-Delete all the apps I mentioned in the list above.
-If a firmware update was installed on your phone OTA, I would ask you to perform a full hard reset including a cache wipe and then re-install signed apps from the Play Store.
-Dont kill apps all the time. Once or twice a week, restarting your phone is a good practice.
-If battery life matters to you a lot, then disable Auto-Sync entirely. However, keep in mind, this will require your data (contacts, gmail, phone data, app data) to be synced manually when there is a working internet connection.
-Reduce animations (in Developer settings) from their current setting to 0.5x if your device is fairly new (2013 onwards) or 0x if your device is old or you hate animations.

Lastly, I would like you to know that my secondary device is a Snapdragon 600 Galaxy S4, the LTE variant. It works perfectly on Stock 5.0.1, with a hard reset performed immediately after the update.
I have apps like Facebook, Messenger and WhatsApp on it, and a few more including Tapatalk, and the phone is not laggy at all.
In fact, it almost as quick as my S6.
