can u shed some light on this problem of the engine revving up like mad all by itself, please

I guess that revving up occured after you finnished climbing some steep hill on the way??
Diesel engines are fitted with a thing called "speed governor". Forget about technical stuff, its simple job is to increase the desiel flow to engine (without change in throttle input by the driver) to cater for the possible reduction in speed on steep climbs. This governor operates becaue of negative pressure (vacuum) applied through the induction manifold. A small vacuum pipe operates it. Now when this governor atarts getting stuck up and fails to return to its default position, the increased flow of desiel is not reduced when the steep climb is finnished. Result= high engine RPM. I tried to explain it in lay man terms. hope not a greek. mind u many mechanics also dont know the reason bc charades engines designed in early 80s are still small mircles beyond the vision of many mechanics.
i hope this will help. feel free to discuss, i might be wrong and i have learned alot from this forum
You are exactly right. I have faced this problem of revving after climbing steep inclines like hill and interchange ramps of motorway.
And you are right the mechanics dont have a solution.
Please guide me how / where to fix this problem.
Thanks for pointing the exact nature of problem
