The road 10km before lawari tunnel and 10km after lawari tunnel is not suitable for car, i have seen few corolla(2008). corolla(2015) perhaps rent a car and modified i.e with increased ground clearance, and mostly NCP fielders. For that portion get your car raised, other wise car is not recommended on that patch.
Rest all the road is as same as else where in Pakistan, some where good, some where bad. Road condition up to upper dir is normal, After lawari tunnel, towards chitral, road is narrow and somewhere broken but any car can make it upto Chitral city.
Another option is going via swat motorway, since it is not yet completed, at some places there are diversions. If coming from Islamabad side at one or two places the height is quite steep on this diversions, but going back to Islamabad via swat motorway is better option.
From Kernal Sher Khan Interchange to Katlang Interchange motor way is complete and charging toll on it, From Katlang to Palai it complete and open but for now one can travel free on that patch, Even motorcycles are there. From Palai to Chakdara Interchange its incomplete but open with diversions(very narrow but carpeted), and here one of the diversion is steep. From chakdara Interchange to chakdara main road (1-1.5km), no road dirt and gravel only, but plain and car can easily make it.
