Old Corollas are similar. They have simpler rear suspension; the automatic transmission is much more robust. However, almost every old Corolla I have seen has been abused beyond reason, since people have the misconception that these cars are invincible. Also, they are way too overpriced for their age, precisely because of the "gadi mazboot hai" myth.
Also, most Corollas require original, pricey shims for their tappet settings. Since people are cheap, get the tappets "adjusted" by grinding the valve stems down, damaging the engine in the long run.
Personally, I would only consider 1.8 Corollas; stay away from 1.3 and 1.6. People with a 1.8 tend to take care of them slightly better.
