Yeah you are right about oxygen not being inside the cylinder
Combustion of leaked cng will produce heat. That heat will heat up molecules inside the cylinder. Increasing their kinetic energy to a point where cylinder cannot handle the pressure any more.

heat will be produced OUTSIDE.. and at the same time.. gas will keep on lowering its pressure inside the cylinder due to its speedy leakage.. resulting NOT CREATING such pressure inside the cylinder which may cause it to explode..
in short ..
ACTION:- leakage of gas.. REACTION:- lowering pressure of gas inside cylinder
RESULT:- contineous flare of file outside the cylinder until all of gas is burnt..
END RESULT:- an empty cylinder..!

How come they got burn injuries then?

injuries were due to FORCE which evolved from EXPLOSION, just like when we PIN a balloon, we do feel a little air striking us.. that is bcoz the gas is not compressedand is in small volume.. but compressed gas does produce greater force, so is the force which might had torn them.. and BURN injuries were due to that flame which had combusted in the mili micro second of time..!

CNG cylinders don't blow up like this. They are built to handle a much higher pressure than 200 bar. Usually LPG and oxygen cylinders fitted by super ustaads blow.

If CNG cylinders could blow up like this , we would have the highest number of cases in Karachi since Karachi has more cars than all other regions combined. Recently a couple of buses blew up only because they had lpg cylinders fitted. Why is that Cylinders only blow up in small cities where there is less awareness about safety.

exactly, cylinders are made of carbon fiber. it doesn't blow up rather it gets punctured. all cylinders involved in blast are cheap lpg cylinders. sometimes saving money is so tempting for poor people that they even risk their life for it.

ever tried lifting a cng cylinder?i dont think so, thats why u said they are made of light weight materials like carbon fibr
plus cylinders are made to sustain uptill 400 bars i heard
200bars is the recommended safety limit
i am sure all of u have filled at 250 pressure at sometime.nothing happens

When using CNG, you ONLY want to use the proper authorized cylinder. NEVER TRY TO PUT CNG INTO ANY OTHER TYPE OF CYLINDER! CNG is more highly compressed than other options, like propane - putting CNG into a Propane cylinder, for example, would be (and [I]has been) disastrous.

CNG CYLINDER TESTING:

The testing that CNG Cylinders undergo is extreme and should reassure even the biggest worrier.

• [LEFT]Hydraulic Cycle Pressure Testing (using water). A leak qualifies as a failure, rather than a full rupture.
• [LEFT]Low Temperature Pressure Cycling: Hydraulic pressure cycle test while the tank is chilled to -40?F, after which the tank is heated to 149?F for additional pressure cycle testing. Pressure cycling simulates the tank being filled and emptied.
• [LEFT]Drop Impact Testing: Tanks are at dropped from multiple angles and impact points while empty (not full) because this creates the most severe condition. Abrasions from the impact are acceptable and normal, any rupturing is considered to be a failure.
• [LEFT]Bonfire Test: CNG Cylinders are designed to "vent" the gas rather than allowing a cylinder to rupture or "explode" when exposed directly to fire. Because CNG is lighter than air, the venting would create a "torch" effect, burning directly upright for a few brief moments until the gas has dissipated.
• [LEFT]Environmental Exposure Test: Cylinders are exposed to a variety of elements, including road salt, battery acid, gasoline, fertilizer and more while the tanks are simultaneously pressure cycled.
• [LEFT]Damage Tolerance/Gunfire Test: While none of us actually expects to be shot at while driving (unless you are prone to bringing out the "road rage" in your fellow drivers), the cylinders are subjected to a gunfire test.
• [LEFT]Vibration Test: Cylinders are vibrated to simulate driving conditions.
• [LEFT]Hydraulic Crush Test: Cylinders are pressurized and then submitted to extreme pressure in an attempt to "crush" the tank.
• Drag Test: Cylinders are "dragged" on roadways.

True the cylinder gone old n weak n mostly in kpk cng sta run on high pressure like 220 to 260. I have even seen 300 n they do it just to shuff more gas in ur tank for grabbing more money.

CNG Cylinders are made by using a variety of substances including carbon fiber, reinforced alloy, wire mesh, cermamic etc . It has layers and are designed to handle a much higher pressure.
