whats the gear position layout of honda city?

I faced the same problem in my city as well. Since I am from Abbottabad and almost spent half of my life driving on those hilly terrains, usually I manage this. Advisable is that shif to "L" which in your car case is the lower shift and that is the only option you have. The moment you feel that your brakes are getting little hard, stop and give them a break.

You can do one more thing, which is CHANGE THE DAMN CAR and get a mannual one.

you should check videos which will be uploaded by salarzae in couple of days of his drive to nathai gali,, and how he controls the car downhill and uphill.

mountain drives is all about how to control the car with engine speed regardless of manual or auto shifting and minimal pressure on brakes. there should be picture in which levin is touching brakes rotors with hand right after drive to show they are not that hot at all.

determine the gear ratios when switched to "s" and "l" by going through ur manual, whichever has the greater ratio, consider it the one that u must use.

L=low

it NOT slow mode at all , rafer to manual for comfirmation.
in D mode in vario ur rpm should not go abv 4k and in S mode it should touch 6K thats wt i have read on net and thats how it works in my city. on net, it says in this mode instead of CVT 6 positons, first 4 are used

L
low mode used for towing, low speed high troque situations
max speed in this mode id written in manul
it was some where in 40s range if i remember rite.

S mode will provide u more gear braking than D but for steep downhill and cornering at around max 30ks use L mode.

not in all cars 2 refers to second gear
in civic pros, the symbol is 2, ie second gear
but in cars whre the symbol is D2, it means first 2 gears
atleast thats the standard protocol, D refers to changeable gears

sir may i have a correction plz...u have said that "2" restricts u to only 2nd gear which is wrong..infact in "2" the gear shifts r only restricted to 1st n 2nd gear while in "L" we have only the 1st gear..the thing which u r talking about is another function which is called "2nd start" and it is not available in all the cars infact just in big diesel engine vehicles e.g landcruisers etc. when this function is switched on, the car starts from 2nd gear instead of 1st so that in rush hours the ride is not jerky when u brake n accelerate much often as u might have noticed in diesel engines that they tend to be more responsive due to high torque in low gears.. i think u got my point.. cheerz

yaar, whats the other use for (2)? 2 second break after driving? ure saying the same thing that i'm saying..i said the same thing that d2 selects between the first two gears.

the thing ure talking about is d2 my friend whereby the transmission selects between 1st and 2nd gears.as far as the L is concerned, as i have never driven an automatic vehicle having that "l" practically, i advised the guy to set the car to the highest available ratio whether it be "s" or "l" or whatever, so, we both are correct in our places but certainly no one would agree with u regarding ur explaination of "2", as u claimed that it selects between 1st and 2nd gear.what pupose of d2 is there for brother.

it would be difficult to use it for driving in mountains especially from a dead start ??

in land cruisers etc it would be usefull for getting out of mud or driving in snow in normal sedans mostly the position below the D (by which ever name called) selects the 1st two gears and the last one selects the 1st gear only.

for maximum engine breaking use the last position

most new cars have transmission protections and u can down shif at reasonable speeds up shift to D is anyway possible

city is dead pick car (i hope people with city dont mind) on mountains must chose S or L

which ever the gear you select... it selects between the first and itself...

in city S is sports mode..not slow

it upshifts to next gear when the rpm touches the redline...

L is like 2nd gear.. that is the first two gears... that should be your option...

toyota is offering a better and simpler thing.. called ECT power

its a button that you press...after which the gear changes are overriden .. and occur a few hundred rpm above the normal gear changing rpm... that you should do while going steep uphill or downhill..

overdrive should be selected. to avoid going in to the top gear..

i recommend you go for either a powerful automatic car ..or a manual car...

city idsi is pythetic... get a steermatic. but you need to be educated about the transmission of honda...

ok, heres the last shot at trying to clear the confusion...@minex, when u say by selecting overdrive, the car doesn't switch to smaller gear ratios, u make a technical error here. the sentence should be more like "when u DISABLE overdrive(light stays on) the car doesn't switch to smaller gear ratios". i know u know what the overdrive is and how it functions but ur sentence has "TECHNICAL" error..

o ho saqib bhai, i said this only to put accross this point to others that whenever they read somewhere about switching on the overdrive they would think that it means to keep the overdrive light lit...on the other hand, "TECHNICALLY" turning on the overdrive means opposite..

User manual must be read..that explains the best from the manufacturer.....

nowmally overdrive light means that Od is off and you are not shifting into top most gear... which should be your option uphill or down hill...

Make a hole in the floor, while coming downhill, just place your feet on the road, simple, other wise you may not be going downhill but Notting hill
