UPDATES ABOUT 2 NEW VARIANTS + variants' impact on vaccines
(A) COVID-19 Variant called B.1.1.7 from UK has acquired 17 mutations. 8 of these mutations occur in the critical Spike protein region. Important ones:
1. N510Y makes it bind more tightly to receptor
2. D614G makes it spread more easily
3. Deletion 69-70del can help it evade body immunity
Means spreads more easily. Still no evidence that it causes more severe illness. But just by numbers it can infect, it can cause more suffering and death. Keep your precautions folks!

(B) Another new variant from South Africa, referred to as 501.V2, is discovered by a network of scientists who have been tracking genetics of SARS-COV-2 virus. This is the South African strain that developed independent of UK strain and is much more infectious than UK strain.
I am sure these strains are now everywhere. These have now been found in Australia, other EU countries and Singapore just reported yesterday. Critical to see what vaccine makers say after their tests.
