I m really amazed to see the interest that every body has shown in making this dream a reality i.e. building our own "PC based scan/tune tool" . @testdriver's efforts r really commendable. @thanda thanx for the links u suggested, they were quite informative and u seems 2 b a nice surfer:).
Anyways, up till now some of my concepts have been clarified but some got confused. Let me share my understanding step by step & plz correct me if I m wrong.
I always thought that OBD is an OS for ECM, like Windows is for PC. And ALDL is data port of ECM like serial/RS-232 is com port of a PC.
The reason due to which the two data ports (ALDL of ECM & serial port of PC) simply donot communicate through cross cables is the difference in voltage levels or impedance matching kind of issues.
So manufacturer of scantools design the application software / OS of their scan tool compatible with either OBD1, OBD2 or CANbus etc and their device becomes a generic OBDx scantool.
Whereas, manufacturers of cars provide the data cartridge to customers in order to fit in "a generic scantool" in their cars without experiencing level matching issues.
If this is the case than ECM of Daewoo Racer (i.e. pre-1994) should have complied the software standard of OBD1 (may be with minor variations) and must talk to sofwares like winALDL. (I came to know about this software through the link mentioned by @thanda, I downloaded and installed & found very interesting)
Similarly, the data cartridge issue must be resolved by designing a level matching cct as tried by @testdriver. An effort made by MAFAK on Making Aldl Cable To Connect PC To OBD1 Ecu might also work.
Comments awaited!
