If you say that idling the engine is good break in or just some gentle revving, lets assume its true - do you have any remote idea what this would cost engine manufacturers? you think brand owners start and idle their engines for hours at end before installing in the car?

first sign is oil deposit on cylinder walls? - the hone pattern on the cylinders is exactly put for the purpose of "holding oil" - the rough ring surface also holds oil - both materials make their space on each other for life - not loading up the engine will cause the rings to polish up and have poor mechanical seal when under high power demand. That is why all engines - even brand new assemblies on test stands on manufacturer level are started up with hot liquids, broken in under variable load for a few minutes and gunned to high rpm to measure result output.

And yet then these manufacturers write instructions on the owners manual directing customers how to drive the car to a certain mileage in order not to void the warrenty. I don?t know what your issues are friend, earlier you thought the head is unusable, destined to be scrapped. We were able to use the same head. Then you had a point of view if it is used it will give horrendous unimaginable knocks, while standing at the back of the car I witnessed nice pristine exhaust note. Then it was with the engine break-in stuff. I told you there is not just one correct way but multiple correct ways of doing it. Hell if one is good at one?s work, one can develop its own correct way of engine break-in routine and sell it in his business model as a USP. For you besides good power output, noiseless engine, a fuel efficient engine is not a success yardstick; then one wonders why people are getting hooked to hybrids. People are better off with a horse cart, it will give one horse power and unlimited efficiency with all good handling characteristics if time is not money. Now you want me to give you owner manuals with driving instructions. As far as engine life goes; you are here, I am here and the engine is going nowhere either. We shall see in few years? time whether our practical or your theory turns out to be correct. If we fail, don?t worry we will give our money back to the client as we invested in it even before he did and will send you the pic of it too.

Don?t be offended; if you want to know/ learn what we did with the head, the cylinders, the pistons, the engine break-in and stuff and the tricks up our sleeve, it will not be for free, apprenticeship is the way. For the first 1000kms its the break in period for rebuilt engines. Firstly donot drive the engine at constant rpm like driving on straight highway for 100kms under same rpm. Don't open the throttle wide open or reving heck out of it. Don't change the oil right away after a day or so u want to leave oil to settle down in the engine and let the oil do its job. If you commute normal stop and go traffic then you;ll be good to go.

cratered head - causes preignition, grinding it increases combustion chamber volume, welding it will warp the head, even when welding such you need a 4047 welding rod and good knowhow of what you are doing - a porous job is worse than the original fault you started with.

Do share with us your facility that uses 4047 rod with an argon shield to weld this up.

a simple question was asked to which I got a fairy tale telling me to go to some imaginary ustaad to ask how this worked - I already know how to repair such - its basic common knowledge (elementary) when working on such machinery. Problem is - its cost prohibitive to do that on this cylinder head.

I suggest to Op that it's better to know to whom he was discussing. What are their back ground. Xulfiqar and senior gtr both are very respectable members of this forum. May be you have done a marvellous job (on the basis of your secret business traits ) , but what they are asking is pretty basic. And a healthy discussion may be fruitful and intresting for people like me.
