Brother, as far as your usage is concern kindly go for lenovo, one of my friend is using it since last year and quite satisfied with performance+battery back-up, other then this you may also consider toshiba.

i have been provided with a vostro from my office, the good thing are its quiet compact and light so mobility is easier.the bad thing is its really poor build qualityi have core i5 and its performance never suggest its an i5. my personal core 2 duo perform better than thismy opinion, go for Thinkpad

i beg to differ. but only dell which is good is dell adamo.....

dell is know for bad batteries and sudden mainboard failures.....

i have used extensively hp, dell, acer, sony and offcourse IBM.

My 5 year old T43 still works for 2 hours on battery without any hitch

my dell inspiron has eaten two batteries in 4 years

hp is however better tgan dell

currently using T420 core i5 with 15 inch screen. extended battery works for 8 i repeat eight hours

sony is good in terms of battery aswell

IMO - IBM are more like mercedes-benz of such machines - they are built to serve purpose and have good serviceability. That is why they come out to $$$$

Since you have not shared the exact model number of the thinkpad its a bit difficult to make a comparison of the two and reach a better conclusion.

I used various models from both of these and many other companies.

I Have good experience with dell inspirons, XPS, lenovo/ibm thinkpad, acer aspire, hp pro book and many other notebooks.

Here is my suggestion:

Want excellent Build quality? get lenovo thinkpad. last week i used b5 machine from lenovo it was awesome.

Want a decent machine with good build quality and best bang for the buck? go for dell.

at the moment im using DELL XPS a complete desktop replacement notebook.

Thanks. You picked two very close competitors. But if you look closely you will see both use different operating systems and if you check from other sites im sure you will find some more changes like, Ram capacity (Dell 4gb > Tp 2gb) hdd speed (Dell 7200rpm > Tp 5400rpm) battery life (Dell < Tp) etc. Keeping these mundane comparisons aside, both will get the work done. What matters is; what makes you feel comfortable.

Seems like i gave an incomplete reply.

After reading about Dell's build quality, I would suggest you go for Lenovo. Just keep a things in mind though;

1. If it is running Windows 64 Bit, then have the Ram size increased to 4GB. Even though 64 Bit Windows does not uses too much Ram, but the programs you're going to be installing are going to need the extra Ram space.

2. Install an anti-virus program. One that costs around 5k and comes with a three year life. Installing any other third grade anti virus program is simply not going to cut it. If they're cheap or free, chances are so are their defending, quranteeing and scanning abilities.

3. When you use other peoples usb drives on your system, or they use yours on theirs and then you use it on your own without scanning it, chances are you've infected your system.
   Getting windows reinstalled is not much of a big problem but a good anti-virus program saves you the headache of not dealing with unexpected assignments lost because a friend used an infected usb drive on your system (without knowing) to save their work on your laptop.
   So to keep yourself trouble free, always backup your work, scan all alien usb before letting them get plugged to your system and do not open .zip, .rar, .exe or any other such files that you get in your email from your friends or classmates; especially if they have not told you about it beforehand. And even if they have, dont. Just ask them to show what it does on their system.

ok LENOVO is what i will suggest you. i am owning lenovo i5 from last 3 months. its an i5. best thing about it is its battery life and its built quality. its quality is nice in this price range. and battery backup is 4+ hours. right now i am using window 8 release preview on it. and its working like a charm. i am loving windows 8 btw.

only drawback is its below average camera result during a video call if i compare it with hp g6 series. i will not recomend you this lapy if you are a frequent video caller. other then this its a perfect machine. its speedy too.

I am using lenovo think pad edge 15 i3 since last 1.5 years. I am fully satisfied with its performance. It is mine office machine. I also play games on it. It gives no trouble to me. After 1.5 years it battery time is almost same as when it was new
