and fuel runs out...@stoned saint...this is how we did it!!

The economy model of the bug did not come with a fuel gauge...instead it ran a reserve tap just like that on bikes...the bug however, was already in reserve at this point:P so once it stopped...we had to pop open the jerry can and empty its contents into the bugs 36litre belly!!!

At Rama, Fast University's trip had arrived...and in the fleet of 4X4 Jeeps, stood one VW, proud and with its head held high...of course, we were pretty smug too!! she had done pretty darn well!!! infact, better than any of us expected...not a squeak or a rattle...and not one still as i drive her in Islamabad today...at 42 years old, thats the Volkswagen build quality...and thats why a bug is a BUG:D

naturally FAST had booked out all the rooms...so we set up camp instead...

We wired up the bug prior to leaving such that she delivered 220v at 1000watts...so thats the cord u see going into the tent....


and thats the air mattress we filled up running a pump from the bug...this was the source to charge up our cell phones, cameras, laptops,rechargeable fan,torch, electric racket to kill em pesky mosquitoes and any other random electric device we could think of...This was a great idea as it kept our phones running and our camera always on the charge and i would recommend it to every1 who plans such a trip!!

Now what i specially loved about this setup was...while the rest of the hotel lay in darkness after 11 when the generator went off, we had gathered enough electricity in our 84amp car battery all day long to rub it in the faces of all those who took our rooms without the need to fire her up!!

We of course do love our juniors here at FAST...so once camp was all set up and ready, we had a nice fun bonfire with them before calling it a night:D

That wraps up day 7...while this did complete one major part of the journey, i.e visiting deosai, theres more to come!!! sane people would call it the end of their trip and head home...but hey!! sanity is hardly ever fun!!

We were highly impresed by the bug however...she had done what people with 4X4s think twice before trying...many prados and hiluxes even never get to experience this...heck they never get off tarmac...and with this, the bug had shown why it was the most selling car in history and why after 40 years, while cars from the same era have died out...the bug lives on...We were so proud of her at this stage that i almost felt like hugging her...surviving it all is one thing, she was loyal to us and had not given us any trouble...goes to show how if u give a car a little love and care, she will never let u down...something that gives the cars, their human like aspect...something that adds "personality" to them...

Wanted to know about the setup of DC to AC and running appliances on the bug's battery

and finally dms...u have shown some patience hanging around all thru the uploads...well then...heres what we did...i got this power inverter...its a 12v -220v...it gives 1000watts output...i used to run my home stereo in the bug using that back when she wasnt restored:P that was 1400 watts and the inverter often tripped when i turned it up:P
but in regular use, it works brilliantly!!! we ran an extension giving it 6 ports...it gave good amperage and charged the batteries at a nice speed...during the time we drove, we had a rechargeable fan behind the rear seat plugged into that giving air to the people in the back...the economy model does not hav windows in the back that open...the glass is fixed...so this was our solution to that:P

well i dont have the exact break up on me... but overall it cost us around Rs. 83,000/-

This includes it all...prepping the bug before the trip, fuel!!! LOTS AND LOTS of fuel, hotels, food, medicine, random fruits and biscuits/chips we got along the way..toll tax, tea, porters at fairy meadows, horses at fairy meadows, jeep at dairy meadows, wood for bonfire, tips here and there etc...so in essence...literally EVERY expense we faced as a team was included in this...telephone cards etc are not included though...
that breaks it down to approx 20,000rs per head...considering its a 11 day trip, covering a big chunk of the usual destinations of the northern region...it isnt half bad i would say...

do note though, we were 4 guys...we camped when we needed to based on the funds and we didnt go for facy hotels wherever we stayed be it naran or chilas Rama and Besham was a scenario where we had to stay at PTDC...also, we decided that 11 days wasnt a lot and we could do without chicken karahis ...we had it one day i think...the rest was cheaper food... we just graduated and so having not joined at our jobs yet, we were a little low on budget...

That's pretty economic, a 3 day trip to naran, cost us 35K (inclusive of everything)

I bet you must have had more fun camping than the usual hotel rooms.

I dont know why but the pictures are getting very grainy upon upload...maybe someone has any input on how to sort that out? cuz the ones with me are very vivid and sharp...

I would request that you should reduce the size of pictures (in terms of inch, cm or mm) and don't reduce the overall DPI (dots per inch) then the picture will be in small size but same quality.......
