Deosai and Babusar in a VW Beetle? Are you mad? Yes

@toofan...well there were quite a few actually...we ewre carrying tools and parts...quite a few:P
we had screwdrivers adn spanners and pliers and wire cutters and wrenches and sprocket sets...we were also carrying a wire and fuses and fuel line and fuel filter and fuel pump and clutch cable and accelerator cable and distributor rotor and a fan belt and fuel and a headlight bulb and engine oil and a heavy duty jack that could lift the additional weight easy and a second spare tire and rope and tow belt and jump cables and lastly, a piece of flexible lawn pipe to put onto the tail pipes and lift the exhaust above the water if we needed to go in deep:P (crossing kala pani at deosai)...oh and most important...an idiots guide to the VW beetle...it has it all to fix it all...

that was all plan A if she broke down...we fix her...we didnt need to luckily...
Plan B was to obviously tow her to the next town...we had a tow belt for that...
Plan C, in case she broke down disastrously at deosai or babusar for instance, where little help was available, we lock her up, put all the luggage inside and leave her... either we go with the right part from Islamabad again to recover her OR we leave her somehow get her to someone we know in skardu/ gilgit etc and pick her up later...
we knew a few people who were follwoing the trip and had offered to help had there been an issue...a tow was always possible even from deosai... but this plan C was the worst case scenario...we were hoping it wouldnt come to that...
My dad was waiting in case something went bad so that while we returned by bus or something, he could take a rescue team with his friends just to bring her back:P

and at raikot, the man who guarded the bug while we were at fairy meadows(right) and our jeep driver(center), hop right out onto the road to meet us...we gladly get a picture taken with him...

the man who guarded your car is really nice we had long discussion with him when we went back from fairy meadows he was ex army man.

@murtaza...well these ones came fresh off a honda city so i got them "used" for 2000 a piece..pretty cheap considering they had less than a 100kms on them...but if ur budget allows, i would strongly recommend the slightly pricier alternative(4800 each back when i checked) nexen....with the correct treat width, correct profile and better road grip..they are most certainly the way to go..I too shall make the swap soon enough as these are...well poor on braking...

Thanks for the detailed reply, so you would consider Nexen's over Euro Star's? How about some slightly used Yokohama C-drives or Aspecs? I think they'd be a better overall choice, what do you say?

The low profiles put an extra drag on the engine. I ran the 185/65/15's for a short time in my bug due to non availability of proper size and I noticed that I'd be clocking about 4000 rpm when doing 120 km / hr. When I replaced them with correct 165 / 80R15 the RPM's at the same speed dropped by more than 200! Simply put, your engine is working harder to achieve the same speed when running low profile tyres. They work better if your car had, say, size 13 tyres and you decide to put a size or two bigger wheels.

I completely agree, getting the proper profile would be the best idea. I was thinking of getting wider tires in the back because I had a thought of getting negative camber setup on the rear wheels, but I've dropped that plan for now. Which profile would do best 165/80/R15 or 175/70/R15? Thanks for the reply
