Diesel fuel consumption

I think you are not understanding the idea behind it,,, The technology is there and is very robust but there is a problem of user error - which will cause sales downfall. So if unless the user is educated nothing will change.

e.g. the people who own diesel cars have a HOT engine washed by cold high pressure water, the pump warps and goes bad and they think "saala deezal kharab milta hai" - How about you not shutdown windows from the start menu and just pull the plug everytime, then say that microsoft is bad because windows sucks.

Well ofcourse. But it isn't hard to educate all salesmen at the few dozen outlets that they have. Also if they prepare a page or two in urdu+english telling people specific steps that will void warranty and cause irreversible damage to the vehicle then people will become educated about it.

Someone has to do it...and the first one that jumps into the market will reap the benefits.

educating the salesman doesnt help if the owners, their drivers and their mistry believe that they are GOD in car care, remember the old Santros they had a sticker in the engine room written in urdu to NOT WASH THE ENGINE WITH WATER.. how many people followed it??

Why'd they put the sticker there?

Well if they tell them why not to wash the engine bay and the consequences including warranty void and then repair costs involved then people will think twice before doing it.

(I suppose after thinking twice they'll still do it? lol )

The specs on the websites said it shud give 39 miles 2 the galon but this one is giving me abt 30. I figure tht in the 138000 miles of its life its not got much love frm the previous owners. What all services shud i carry out now 2 improve its fuel economy? If it were a petrol car id change the oil, spark plugs, oil air n fuel filters,get a fresh tune up,get the throtle body cleaned. But as i don hav any experience with diesel engines so i need guidance here. Thanks.

No experience here but you should go for an engine flush alongwith cleaning of injectors. Use liqui moly. After that fresh quality oil, new oil filter, new air filter and you're good to go!

Best get it diagnosed, ask for a printout of rail pressure and injector cycle etc and ask them to provide you "service" range data too.

Do not tune this engine like a petrol one, the throttle is just to aid the EGR at idle, anything above it opens full. The manifold and intercooler get plugged up with soot so you might need to have them cleaned out.

petrol consumption is high because its a passenger vehicle fuel that has lesser range than diesel - more is used..

the overall ratio of petrol/diesel cars is dependant on markets, e.g. US market does not have much diesel share because cars here are disposable tissues and the oil giants want their dollars so they would sell more of a fuel that burns faster. Diesel as passenger vehicle fuel is very popular in EU because of fuel cost over there. Asian market has equal of both..

speaking of consumption - all heavy road moving in the world is done by diesel so you cant say its consumption is low..

btw, I was wondering whether direct fuel injection into the chamber for newer petrol engines eg. Audi's FSI engines are as good as the diesels? Do they also get mileage/performance comparable to diesels?

U have given great suggestions to get the pakwheelers to get their diesel engines properly tuned.
Can u guide me the impact of bigger size tyres on the fuel consumption?
Suppose a b 14 having 2.0 d engine using 205 size tyre, how much will reduce its average per liter?

sir whats the optimum and correct gear ratios of diesel 2c car ? i mean is it ok if we change gear maximum at 2k rpm ? some people say "is gaari ko khench kar chalana chahiye" and shift only at 3k rpm ? so whats ur recommendation on this ? thanks

diesels are very long life engines, and require less maintenance than their petrol cousins - the problem in Pakistan is ustaadjee trying to milk money from the owners, they have one gauge of diesel engine health, "backpressure measured at idle" Its wrong - they judge oil by its color and slick between fingers, its wrong.. You need proper analysis tools to determine a problem.

Yes we have old diesel technology at hand but that does not mean its doomed to be smoky etc, in correct tune it will be silent and clean. The newer DI engines have more torque and less noise but have a number of added technology which our ustaads dont understand and our owners do not want to spend money on correct diagnosis, their drivers are their best service advisers who then pour API CE grade oil in them and wonder why their turbocharger bearings gave away, they blame fuel quality etc etc. while the fault is their own.

u r right aour ustadz are just dump people we owned 3 2.od corollas, we never got it tuned by local ustads it was used as second car on long routes, on factory settings itused to touch 19-20kms / ltr used to change oil diesel filter and air filter every 2200km and the car was always ready for action just because my father didnt let any mechanic touch the engine for his desi style tunning. only one on them managed 96000kms is 5 years and one of them did 60000kmz in 5 years but they were clean as anything
eventually it used to stand in the garage for long periods of time so had to sell it but still miss the power of that thing 5 people and nathiagali was no problem for our 2.od

Brother I had a 2006 2.0D and a saloon variant on stock rims and tyre profile I was getting 14-15km/l in city with ac on and on longs 16-17km/l after 1 year since purchase I upgrades to 15 rims and 205/60 profile on both cars there was no change in the avg I still got the same from both variants...

Mittu brother never do that ...this is tipical petrol/cng method you yourself drive your car and are very well aware of the power the 2c produces and can judge easily when to change gears. I preferred to change gears at 1.5k on my 2010 SR and the more you floor it the more smoke it will throw reducing engine life and making the sound of the engine louder on idle afterwards...

Brother you are right and as Xulfiqar bhai has said diesel last longer then petrol cars. we did 1lac kms on our 2006 2.OD it was totally maintained by just regular oil change never went to workshop and I never let any mechanic get his hands on it not even the authorized dealers as there test drive on my car showed they only floor a car like an ordinary petrol car....The car was sold to my father's friend whom has driven it to 2lac kms now and still smoke free as he maintained it like we did....still miss it..

same here had a 2003 2.od sallon awesome thing sold after 5 years at 60000kmz sold it to a friend of my cousin he still is enjoying it and well we are missing it , and similarly my father also didnt let anyone drive the car not even the driver as the car under a single hand is always well maintained
