Diesel Pajero cold starting issue

stoves under the engine are a bit dangerous unless you have a russian truck that only has 2 meters of wiring in it.. I have been to alaska and this is how diesel engines are started in -40C.

make sure the engine block heater was plugged in overnight (coolant mix should be compatible with the temperature)
make sure the engine oil is full synthetic and proven to flow in cold
make double sure your battery is up to snuff (some even installed battery warming blanket)
make sure the fuel is not gelled (half kero half diesel)
make sure the gearbox is disenaged in manual or the ATF is synthetic in aatome tuc
press the accelerator to the floor 2 times and release (if old school injection pump)
glow for full 1 cycle
crank engine, if it catches - even on 1 cylinder keep it running till it catches all.

Check glow plugs and glow plugs relay,being overaged contacts of relay gets worn out and obstructed current flow.

If your car is a domestic version it should have dual batteries to support the cold starting conditions as in Japan......desi imports have a single one but if your battery is amperage is good it should hold out evenly well. Lastly, it is recommended by the manufacturer to add 5-10 % of gasoline of the total volume in your diesel tank for extreme cold weather starts, but this should only be done once all other issues mentioned above have been sorted out. Last year I had similar experience with my HJ60, 1989, 425 k with stock 2H engine, I took it to Swat Peace Snow Rally in Kalam and due to snow blizzard the tmp went upto -11 in morning with 2-2.5 ft snow, hardly tires were visible but thank Allah almighty i put Toyota Anti Freeze Coolant pre mixed 50/50% although it had cost me 10k to fill this beast with 15 lit of coolant but my ride got started on second self. Check the glow plugs first.

Sir thanx a lot for a detailed list of culprits. There is smoke only @ startup and no continuous smoke during running. And yes, it has two batteries and both of them are ok coz after so many selfs, there is no issue of amperage.
Previous owner told me that heaters are ok as far as his mechanic told. But still i shall check these as soon as I find time. And lastly, hope not to put a stove underneath...hahaha.

Sir, I noticed that there is no coolant in mine. Radiator is filled with water only. Will put it soon. I used pink color coolant from toyota (genuine) for my 2.0D previously, so will put the same in becharo. BTW nice pics of ur LC.

Use Caltex's orange coolant but if your rad is only filled with water I'd NOT recommend going 50% mixing ratios straightaway. Might dislodge the sludge/rust in your system and resultantly choke your radiator altogether. Start with a litre in the entire system and drain around 2 weeks of usage. Notice the amount of debris coming out and repeat if it is significant. Go 50-50 later, after these cycles only.

according to zubaida aapa, if u fill the radiator with boiling water from cattle, the engine would start without any troubles,

For 4M40, the story may be different. For 4D56, the trouble of starting is on higher side. But I will fix it soon Insha Allah.
