@goodman: the 1st # is the viscoscity/thickness of oil, the 2nd # I think is the API rating (not sure).

Plz check the maintenance brochure of your Suzuki/other vehicle. The appropriate oil specs will be mentioned there.

From my Suzuki Liana Manual:

10w-40: 20c-40c temperature
10w-30: 20c-30c temperature
5w-30: minus 30-plus 30c temperature

Based on our climates, the 10w-40 seems to be the best oil for summers, and 10w-30 for winters.

This was learning for me too

So, in hot climates, going for a lower viscoscity oil would not only be nonbeneficial, it would lead to inadequate heat protection!

local oils (shell, caltex, total, etc.) cannot be good either.
Depending upon the care you do to your car, feed it fully synthetic or semi synthetic engine oils from the imported companies. These are bit expensive, but winter is on its way and these oils will keep your engine healthy, happy and will improve the mileage as well.

Note: only purchase the imported oils from the well reputed distributors.

I have a really bad experience with Caltex havoline fully synthetic 5w-40.
Oil level was dropped like anything in just 50k driven motor. oil level was heavily dropped just after 4000 km. Currently using havoline formula 10w-30. Till now car has covered 2.5k kms and oil level has not dropped yet.
I'm thinking to give Shell helix ultra 5w-40 a try. What do you people suggest?

Using caltex fully synthetic since almost 2 years not a single issue so far, if ur car is reducing thin oil that means rings r weak.

i replied on a separate thread in which a brother needed an advise for the vitz 2010.
But you have reborn and i like this car much. A close friend of mine having the same car. Its 190k driven (2009 model) but still the engine is pretty healthy to run an other 100k without any problem.

I would paste the same comments as i did there. Plz follow the same.

my personal recommendations goes to imported oils but bought from the original dealers.

HIGH GRADE OILS

Liqui Moly 0/40
first time change it after 5k, but next time 10k for sure. But change filters after 5k.

zic xq 5/40
its high grade oil but just give it a try if its suits your car well.
first time change it after 5k, but next time 8k for sure. But change filters after 4k.

PTT Performa 0/40, super synthetic
first time change it after 5k, but next time 8k for sure. But change filters after 4k.

OPTIONS NEXT TO HIGH GRADE OILS ARE

Liqui Moly synthoil 5/40
first time change it after 5k, but next time 8k for sure. But change filters after 4k.

Ptt performa fully aynthetic 5/40

Car : Honda Civic 2008 and 2009 model
Covered mileage = 86,000km & 50,000 km.
Both the cars are thoroughly Honda maintained and engine is in top notch condition. No blows and any kind of blue/whitish smoke. Pick and top speed is fine too.

Brother,
zic recently started this scheme. T-shirts, carpet cleaner, generator, and gold.
Couple of years back they started similar scheme too and people were buying zic oil like hot cakes. At that time actually its re-packing was started here. And they wanted to know their dominance in the market.

as per my opinion, when some factory starts some kind of such useless n absurd schemes, then simply we should know that they are significantly dropping their quality level.

as per my knowledge, only zic xq n zic m are being imported directly from korea because of their rare demands. All others, zic a+, a, ow & hiflow are being packed here. Even mobil1 too. But it will take years for our other brothers here to understand this dirty truth.
Zic's quality cannot be trusted any more. Its time to increase our knowlwdge about other good available oils in the market like ptt performa, volvoline, liqui moly, sim, etc. These oils are far better in terms of their quality as compare to local oils.
Try them and feel the difference.

very recently zic has came up with new scheme of kfc zinger burger. But interesting point is that this scheme is only for the hiflow and zic a/a+.
Its not for xq or ow.

this scheme is infact an enormous push to the shop owners to increase sales for a/a+ , hiflow and giving them extra benefits (hidden). But for the wise people this scheme is direct intimation that the quality of these oils are significantly dropping. Because "just" sales are important for them and not the quality of the oil or the expensive vehicle of the consumer.

(I like civic. Its nice car. But when i will have the same, then i will never ever feed it with local oils (caltex, shell, honda, toyota, pso, etc.). Because i personally feel that these local oils are not of enough good quality and doesnt even meet the international standards. Though their stickers speak alot about standards, but infact i dont believe that are even close to these standards).

honda, toyota n suzuki DO NOT produce any kind of oils. They just bought from outside and tag them as originals. Thousands of our brothers just buying from these companies considering them as geniune. But infact these car companies are buying from local companies like caltex, shell, total, etc. Hence i dont like them at all. And most importantly the quality which i personally feel doesnt meet the international standards. This is what i really feel, believe and advise to close friends too.
