I came in contact with only one clutched fan since I became old enough and actively involved in our vehicles and that was on a 2c in a Townace.

The townace had inherent issues with heating up due to the location of the radiator and the clutch was bypassed by tightening the adjustment screw making it run all the time.

Moreover, the fan pully was shortened to increase the RPMs of the fan.

The result was a roar every time we stepped on the gas and loss of power. Not to mention the noise on highways.

The townace has no problems in cooling down if the radiator shrouding is present and the radiator fins are clean, usually they get clogged with dirt which then causes the clutch never to work as it remains cold. The clutch needs to get blazing hot to work - approximately 75C air causes the bimetal spring to rotate and the oil pathways to open causing the clutch to engage.

In highway conditions the clutch is 90% of the times freewheeling as the drive torque of the air hitting the fan and the engine turning the clutch hub usually results in equal rpm - hence zero work and no noise either. Fan noise only occurs when the pressure differential from the front to back is offset - (boring information I know - usually causes my freinds to fall asleep)

In stationary condition the little amount of air the fan is pulling through the shroud causes the air to be sucked through the radiator and also heat up the bimetal - at which time the fan will start to engage and you will then hear it as soon as you accelerate the engine. Even in idling rpm with fan engaged the air flow increases and keeps the temperature steady. With A/C some cars (MB etc) use additional fans at very low rpm to cool the condenser. That setup also allows to engage full rpm of the electric fans if the engine seems to be overheating (those cars then sound like aircraft turbines spooling up)

The best setups are Fords - you only see one fan clutch and a big mean looking metal fan taking care of the A/C and engine - Ford truck A/Cs can make the cabin a literal freezer in 50C weather while idling in the sun - and all you see is one single fan silently pulling air.

Awesome! Not boring at all. I found out that stuff later when I started maintaining cars on my own. This was done when I was in school and the mechanic did this.
We still have the Townace with us and if I ever get my hands on it, it will be some project.

Its a nice comfy vehicle but seriously underpowered. The turbo 2.4L version might be a bit better.

the townace is slow - no matter how you wish to see it. IMO - every toyota van including the hiace is slow after driving a MB sprinter.

the townace uses all the toyota corolla engines - so technically you can shove a toyota 2C - turbo in it and go cruising - the Toyota 2CT is pretty darn silly at highway rpm because of the little turbo

I did similar DIY 1984 to my car (a 4-Gen Toyota Corolla E-70 aka 1982) it too had this viscous clutch and made so much noise that whole neighborhood could hear me coming. Then we bought the new Front Wheel Corolla E-80 in 1983, this car came with electric fan.

I managed to get electric fan and thermoswitch, and converted the car to electric fan.

All was good, but as soon the weather turned hot the cooling system could not keep up with the weather especially with the AC working.

Then I realized that the flow of air had been compromised due to which the cooling system was suffering, and I changed it back to the viscous clutch fan.

As regards to your project, I agree with Xulfiqar you better shift back to OEM fan, as we overlook the air flow through the radiator and over the engine.

@mwm749 thanks mate. Yes I did return the OEM fan as the E-fan was just a trial
