Engine knock on cold start, how to fix?

Mine have a 4A31 660cc Turbo engine but l couldn't find the distributor.

My car knoks while in top gear and accelerating. Any idea how to retard the timing?

Distributor is located at rear of engine, just look over from top of intercooler. Follow these arrows,

You will find a component mounted at rear side of engine with a 12mm bolt and wire connector on it, and this bolt mount have space for rotation once bolt is loosened a bit. CCW = Advance, CW = Retard.

Do mark current position or take a photo with phone. Make small changes, like 1mm or 2mm max.

I think that black part is "CAM position Sensor", responsible for all ignition timing. But from it's location / position on the engine, it looks more like Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor.

I will check on my vehicle and try to adjust the timing.

Yes, you are right. Its camshaft position sensor, which impacts the timing distributor (ICs in ECU) sends signals to spark plugs.

I took a photo, which will help identify it.

Update,

Today while driving, I noticed that engine is less noisy overall compared to before the timing adjustment. I usually change gears between 3k to 4k RPMs when accelerating. Before, engine would start getting loud at 3.5k RPMs, and too loud at 5k RPMs.

I shared the video which gave me idea where to check. You will have to locate cam sensor (distributor in old engine terms), then loosen its bolt and adjust it couple of millimeters at a day.

Try to get hold of its service manual, which should show where cam sensor is located.

I owe a 1994 corolla, i have the same issue when i start my car in the morning there is a ticking sound and when i press the accelator then its gone i have a clip but unable to attach it started when i installed a kabli 12 valve 4 cylinder head, after that i also changed the oil pump kit i thought it may due to less oil pressure, but its still there please help.

There are multiple reasons for engine knock. Try to adjust ignition timing which easy and you can do yourself. Check the video I shared in post above which helps understanding the issue and other reasons for engine knock.
