Yes rotaries are Different animals. I live in Islamabad and currently my 2007 Rx8 is over 100k Driven with no cold or hot start issues. So i am with 100k Club folks.lols.
As far as not driving 8 on short trips is concerned, you can do it but but but you must redline it on first gear on that short trip to avoid carbon buildup, i go to my market and whenever i find a little space i redline it and hence problem solved.
Maintenance is the key but more important is how to maintain it and make the cooling mods so that our 8 can drive in our extreme weather. Your are right in every aspect and if my rotor fails in future, i will replace it with a rotory for sure. BTW, i never put oil in my fuel tank for the past 50k kms, so who knows thats y im getting that astonishing odo reading
