Family Visit to Upper Neelam Valley June 2014

74 kilometers from Muzaffarabad there is a small town known as Kundal Shahi. From here you can either go straight to Keran which is further 20 kms ahead or you can move left uphill to Kuttan which is 7 kms up. You can get SCO sim from telephone exchange in Kundal Shahi Bazar. You must have copy of ID card and it costs 100 Rs. Someone told me that this SIM works everywhere but it was wrong. Sim works in very few areas like Athmuqam, and Kel and few lass known villages.

In around 2.5 hours you reach Keran. Indian border start near ATh Muqam and at Keran Resort River Neelam separates India and Pakistan

Valley Trackers has a nice resort at Keran. A large lawn just beside River Neelam. Rooms are ok with tv and small fridge. Menu is limited

from muzaffarabad how much time is required to reach karen? is road ok for cars or 4*4 required?

2.5 hours and road is good. Any car can go. Menu limited means few dishes are available.

I visited Neelam Family with my Family between 21st June - 27th June 2014. The purpose of this thread is to guide others what i learnt on this trip. I am sure this will help you to plan your vacations better.

Neelam Valley is a hidden Gem, a heaven for nature lovers. You will find lots and lots of water falls and amazing scenery. Dense Pine Jungles adds to the beauty. You will see simple and elegant life style of Kashmiris.

From Murree till kohala try to take bourban road as Aliot road is bad

From kohala till Muzafferabad there are few land slide areas. Rest road is good. Road can get blocked due to land slide in heavy rain.

Neelam Valley road is just before CMH. Do ask for directions as it is easy to get lost if you are visiting this city for first time.

It takes 2.5 hours to reach kutton

For kutton take left turn just after crossing jagran stream in kundal shahi.

Kutton road is not good so slow drive is advised. Any car can climb.

There is excellent cheap accommodation at kutton but you need to get it booked from Jagran Hydro Office in Muzafferabad.

There is AJK tourist resort at Kutton but rooms are not good quality. Food is also very expensive so do ask cook before ordering or they will rip your pocket in a day. I had to pay 1600 rs for 6 chicken tikka of extremely small size.

Juts after Keran Bazar a road turns up towards Neelum Village. View are breathtaking from there and it is highly recommended for Nature Lovers. Road is narrow but carpeted. It is 3km with some sharp turns so your car must have good clutch plate. Automatic transmission cars drive very smoothly. Do check your car breaks as they will be used a lot on way back. Road is narrow so do watch any traffic coming and try to find a slot where 2 cars can cross side by side. There are some small huts available in neelam village. Room Rents from 1500 to 2500. All of these huts are kashmiri houses made of wood so no sound proofing. You will be lucky if you can find attach baths as well.
