FJ40 is riding Jumpy - Solution?

There is nothing wrong with your FJ bro.4x4's tend to be jumpy and with leaf-springs on all 4 wheels - the tendency is felt even more. Don't try any "juggars" as it will only ruin your very nice ride.

Another hint for bumpy ride.. check the shackle pin nuts.. they should not be very tight.. the book says hand tight them.. Kamani walon k chotay full zoor laga k tight kar detay hein

I don't think so this will be helpful. Tightness of shackle pins have nothing to do with hard ride as the bushes and leaf springs have full movement on the pins even if the pins are fully tight.
Do put me wise if there is something technical about this issue beyond my learning.

Noman bhai.. the Manual says hand tight only the shackle pin nuts.. no need to torque full force as mostly done... try it on your cruiser

Just kidding.... I am sure Akif has tested it on his CJs before recommending it! I have seen shackles on FJs stay put even when the tires are hanging in the air! Pin nuts being too tight could be one possible reason......

.....but it would still not solve the stiff ride riddle as such! The fundamental reason in my view is a mismatch between the loading capacity of the springs vs vehicle weight. I am quite sure the ride would be much smoother with 6 adults in the car or some heavy weight at the back! If so removing some leafs/pattas would be one solution, although not the ideal way to go!

for safety reasons.. let me rephrase.. its snug tight with a spanner/rachet

the idea is not to stand on spanner/rachet to full torque... this is done mostly by chotas with our mistris

OK let me try to put my observation forward again.

The shackle pin is touching the bush from inside of the bush. The leaf spring (shah patta) is touching/ holding the bush from it's outside. Now the bush never moves/ rotates in the shackle/ shah patta. It is the pin which rotates/ moves in the bush. So no matter how much you tighten the nut of the pin, it will never allow both the shackles to touch the leaf spring as the pin has collars to hold the shackles. The nut can only break down or can damage the rings (choori) of the pin.

For example if the width of the leaf spring is 3 inch, the shackles will never be able to come closer than 3.25 inch (approx), no matter how much pressure you apply on the nut. And this .25 inch gap is exactly covered by the sides of the bush.

Your understanding on the above is required.

I quote the from the body chasis manual of 1980 cruiser.. says 7.5kg-m torque for the pin nuts.. In contrast the torque for the U bolt (rakaab) is 15kg-m.. in absence of torque wrenches.. the modus operandi is brute force.. this is the only reason i say full zoor laga ke tight nai karna

if aal iz well.. ignore the bumps.. rather enjoy them.. its a short wheel base leaf spung cruiser of the 80's.. that how it rides

I've recently upgraded to bigger MTs 32,11.5, 15. and had to do lots of mods to fit them in my jeep. One of the thing was to lift the vehicle. did that with getting some Tarrh in the existing leaf springs and then adding one additional patta all around.
I didn't go for longer shackles as the mistry said it would interfere with handling at high speeds... adding another patta made the ride quite stiff. I would say about 50% stiffer and bouncier. I am waiting out the spring settling period so hopefully things will get a bit less bumpy..
but as Akif said, it ain't gonna ride like a coil spring vehicle. not sure if one can ever get use to the 'Jhatkaas'

I agree with the take it as it is approach to some extent. But in my experience a stiff ride on a CJ5 or 7 or YJ Wrangler does not come close to a stiff ride on an FJ40 Its a whole different level of stiff/rough, making the CJs seem like coil sprung ponies!

Nevertheless, it seems the thread starter has pretty much accepted his FJ40 as it is, which is probably the best approach for the time being .... and also the consensus view amoungst the FJ40 gurus

make sure the level of the leafs r same n the front size shold b 6 inchs n rear iz 7...n put sum big size leaf bushes......it helps u alot

Well, I don't think that the solution to your FJ40's issue, or should we say situation, should be very expensive. For my understanding, can you help me with the following:

1. Does it run somewhat softer with 3/4 people on board?
2. Have you ever tried driving it with different shocks or without shocks? If so what did you feel was different?
3. Do you have access to a decent or half-decent kamani guy near where you are?
