I have a total different theory about their performance up until now and it is related to some what @UK have said in his post about the under weight on Brawn GP cars. My theory is they don't have KERS working on the cars and as it is possible that they are simulating KERS effects without it on board that is to have a minimum weight limitation with KERS on board and then using the limit for having same amount of fuel on board. While all other cars have KERS on board and they have to carry that system through out the race while having fuel of same weight will certainly starting to decrease as laps are covered. My theory is being supported by BMW Motor Sport Director in an interview. Here is the link to that interview.

Jerez day two - Alonso and Renault end Brawn domination
Renault’s Fernando Alonso was the quickest man at Jerez on Monday, ending Ross Brawn’s team’s recent monopoly on the top of the testing timesheets. Alonso finished less than a tenth of a second ahead of Rubens Barrichello after a productive session at the Spanish circuit.
