I saw a similar kind of incident first hand - it was no explosion - but a good demonstration of pressure getting out of hand.

A CNG service shop had inverted a cars cylinder to empty the oil contents from it, the service man opened the tapered brass fitting from the cylinder - like - he was sitting on it and the cylinder valve was facing inside the shop the back facing the other wall.

when all pressure had been relieved the valve was unscrewed the cylinder shot from the person hitting the wall breaking through it, hitting a dump and a stranded old heap car - it also completely unrooted the dump walls, the persons clothes were blown to smithereens - due to the shock wave of sound.

If such a small amount of pressure can break through concrete walls - it can do anything

CNG cylinder should be checked every 5 years and how many of us follow this?

CNG is in pakistan for some time now and these cylinders are getting old, If authorities dont make this mandatory to fill only certified cylinders these accidents will happen more often.

it should be made a policy all CNG Cars should have a sticker on windscreen with cylinder age and last check.

so far all the exploded ones r something tried to be made locally or oxygen cylinders.
a cng cylinder will not explode in a hatch back even if a truck runs over it from behind

In the meantime, the families should seriously consider suing the manufacturer of the gas cylinder and/or kit.

There's liability somewhere, I'm sure of it. How many more pointless deaths does it take in this country for people to start going to lawyers?

I'm not saying that just because I happen to be a practising lawyer specializing in defective product/product liability and accident claims, but generally, as a matter of public interest.

Just found out today that the cylinder which exploded turned out to be LOCAL made probably Gujranwalla.
Sad part is owners buy them as the price is very low compare to the imported cylinders.
Till now all exploded cylinders turned out to be Local.

once again people choose money over safety.... seriously, this infuriates me about our people!

1. People buy cheap goods which puts their lives at risk
2. People make & sell inferior goods regardless of the risks

as long as people keep buying this garbage, people will keep making it,.. same applies to our local car industry.

That really scares me. I cannot even imagine myself or my loved ones in such a situation.

I need to get my Car's cylinder checked. It is an imported one, but it never got cheked though it was installed probably more than five years back.

Can anyone guide from where can i get it checked?? And do they provide any type of certificate after the inspection?

If I am not mistaken CNG cylinders can be tested at the government's CNG facility in Islamabad. But I am not really sure. as far as cylinders need proof testing, I have a friend who has a masters degree in metallurgy and he told me that cylinders manufactured in Italy or Argentina or some reputable country are pressure tested and really do not require to be tested again unless they are in very poor and rusted condition. The cylinders which usually explode in Pakistan are usually in taxis. They use locally made cylinders which are essentially 2 metal cylinders welded to each other. This weld is the weakest link and ruptures when gas pressure is exerted on it. Cylinders made by reputable companies are made in one piece (seamless) and therefore don't have any weak area.
