Hard Chrome: where's the best chrome plating facility in your town?

Contrary to popular belief, Chrome plating (decorative or hard) is not a rust proof solution. it is merely electroplating a thin layer of chromium on top of another metal. reasons can range from decorative to mechanical such as increasing the surface hardness (wear resistance).

I've had a few objects hard chromed but it generally isn't that big of a deal nor it is super expensive. it is usually expensive than most paint jobs because a lot of man hours are spent on preparing the surface and cleaning it for electroplating. similarly, the solutions are also hazardous and disposing them off also entails a financial cost.

there are other processes as well which are better suited for different applications. for example electroless nickel plating and titanium nitriding are way more harder than any chrome plating you can get and the best part is that both of these are available at facilities in Lahore.

I believe titanium Nitride is brass kind of finish we see on front forks on new sports bikes. They must be expensive.

crankshafts are also nitrided to make them develop a very very tough skin in order to remachine to dead zero standard spec. Mostly the choice when your engines crankshaft is no longer available as repair part.

What did you get hard chromed? How much did it cost you?
The thing with roadside kind of chrome facilities is that they do not spend time on degreasing and preparing the surface for chrome. Thats the reason i think they do not last long.

There is also a coating called DLC coating..... its the hardest coating in existence as they claim..... DLC stands for Diamond Like Carbon. Its used to coat valves,etc and even line cylinders rather than inserting a sleeve.

Titanium nitriding gives a shiny gold like appearance and is a pretty hard surface finish. similarly, electroless nickle looks kinda like chrome but gives a slightly different tint/shade.

I guess you are right, there are plenty of new age coating out there but I am afraid most of them are not available here in Pakistan. electroless nickle and TiNi is however available here.
