Has anyone changed gear oil? When do we have to change gear oil? I bought second hand car and my car has done 144k on ODO. Please guide how to check if it needs changing and which gear oil to use ?

For auto transmission, Oil changing is recommended after this much mileage. Our old owners don't change gear oil at all (carrying inherited manual transmission trend).

You should see the current oil from dip gauge by putting it on finger. And checking the thickness and colour. It should not be black. It must not have any particles or sticky feeling.

Furthermore, while driving, you should not feel any jerks during shift ups and downs. (Test both on slight gas and tough gas "halka paon on accell-paddle and bhari paon")

In both cases, on light, car should be changing gears like it you hardly feel a gear change. While in harsh mode, it should not give harsh jerks.

Use genuine Honda gear oil. And must change if you are planning o drive this car for some notable period

Life is 80k or 1lac m not sure. I changed mine to zic few months back as i was having small jerks during dear shifts. Now its smooth but ppl hardly change it as i hav seen but do check its lvl once in a while. If its less, u might end up with a transmission. Gear oil isent that xpensive. Zic is hardly 580 rupees per litre i guess and total 3 litres is required. If u think it needs to be changed, then change it. Btw ur location? I m in pindi and zic official outlet is hardly 5 mins away from me

Well i live near fazaia and yes jerks hav reduced to minimum. I bought the red bottle and zic official outlet is at missile chowk near khanna pull. If u come from bahria towards islamabad, it comes on ur left side hardly 1 minute from that signal. They hav all products and a very good mechanic who atleast to me does the job pretty fine

You should change all the lubricants i.e. Gear oil, power steering oil, brake & clutch oil, engine oil along with radiator coolant. Except engine oil rest of the lubricants should be changed after every 40, 000 kms or 2 years. Buy original honda lubricants for optimum performance and mental satisfaction.

I heard if you have not changed gear oil after 50k KM its better to never change gear oil. What do you say?

I am feeling slight jerks on gear shifting. Specially alot of jerks from idle to 1st gear. Zic is better or Honda?

The following applies to gear oil, power steering oil, clutch oil. Not to brake oil

if the current oil is very dirty (open caps and observe) then when you change them, there is a risk of leakage because the seals are weak at this stage and the dirt/debris is actually helping the seals seal the oil. When new oil is added and previous fluid is flushed out, there is a risk that leaks will appear. This is the reason people say do no change it if you have never done it. But the thing is that if you are going to keep the car for some time, you have to get them changed sooner or later otherwise your gear box will suffer damage (it is already experiencing wear due to bad oil), your PS pump will fail (its a vane type and sensitive from what I have heard) and your hydraulic clutch assembly will fail (cylinders)

Thanks alot brother for your detailed information. I don't know the info of the fluids of my car if even changed or not. I will get all the fluids inspected and change if needed. I plan to keep the car so I think it's better to change the fluids.. thanks once again.

I'll highly recommend genuine Honda auto transmission oil (ATF)

And! Is there and check engine light or transmission error light ? (Blinking D light)

Guys just posting here maybe it can help someone
So i changed the Manual Gear OIL of my civic 2002 VTI
I bought Gear oil (Honda OEM) from Mehran Autos saddar (They have original).
Price was around 1L=870RS and about 2L was poured into my Manual gearbox. The old gear oil that was taken out after around 144k KM( I am not sure if old owner changed gear oil or not it is my assumption) .OIl was very thin but the color was ok still i changed it. No issue yet with my car Allah ka shukr. Gear changing is same i think maybe a little bit better. I hope after some usage it gets much better. Thanks
and yes i changed the belts too they were over i got Japanse belt (OEM were not available of such old model) and they costed total rs 1000 (Alternator belt+AC belt)
