I've been through with Thinkpad, vaio, toshiba, gateway and dell.And that's the order I rate in reliability and performance.
dell's desk tops are best though. I have one and I'm very pleased with them.

DELL all the way..currently usin VAIO fgn -(forgot:P)n yeah....HP entertainment pavilion DV 6000 for past one and a half year ..still going strongbut DELL is the best thing u can have..VAIO more than sucks....literally ...for all the vaio owners,please check other laptops with same specs as ur VAIO n tell about it<input id="gwProxy" type="hidden"><input onclick="jsCall();" id="jsProxy" type="hidden">
I agree Hp's have problems but not all of themi had hp compaq nx7400 it died after 1.5 years motherboard problem thendv6000 which had display problem claimed warranty thendv5 no problem in 1 yearnow using dell studio 17 and till now its going good also used sony vaio and never had any problem with it but they are expensive and u can get same spec'd laptop from hp or dell much cheaper
macbook and asus are the best in my opinion.
@type R ...thats my pointbtw how is ur dell studioum planin to buy one...once saw dell some model at my friends house..i called her but she couldnt locate the model numbrits like...the bottom side...the place exactly under screen hinges is like half inch goin down than the rest of the laptops underside...dun know what series are they

I've had Dell & Thinkpad in the past and had a great experience. Recent experience with HP & Acer have been far less satisfactory. I was suprised to see Sony high up on the list because few ppl i know with sony had massive issues with harddrive crashing. My nephew just had the harddrive replaced over the summer and the laptop was hardly a yr old.
My company uses it during drive testing and field surveys. These Thinkpads are the most robust and reliable laptops on earth.
I own a compaq laptop and it sure sucks...There's dirt and scratches all over it (i've only been using it for a year now, and it is on only 18-20 hours a day, rest it is in sleep) and it has crap build quality a piece broke off the edge after i accidentally dropped it...
