UPDATE ON LANDSLIDING / LAKE (VILLAGE ATTA ABAD)
Lake Details Ø Hunza lake overtopped the spillway on 29 May, currently the total discharge at Ganish Bridge is 4800 cusecs. Ø Lake situation is being monitored with cameras/Helicopter. Displaced Families / Individuals · Due to Land Sliding. 141 Houses (1652 individuals) of Village Attabad & Sarat displaced due to land sliding on 4 Jan. Need complete rehabilitation (land, housing and livelihood cash grant).
· Due to Inundation. Following have been displaced due to inundation (starting from 10 January onwards till date). Their houses / land has submerged and damage assessment is possible only after the recession of water:-
o Village Ainabad 32 Houses
o Village Shishkat 110 Houses
o Part of Village Gulmit 38 houses
o Hussaini 9 Houses
o Total 189 Houses o Grand Total: (including Atta Abad & Sarat)
330 Houses · Due to Blockage of Access Roads. All the valleys upstream of the lake, to include Shimshal, Sust, Chupurson and Misghar, where no damage has occurred, but people are suffering due to no economic activity and non availability of items of daily sustenance.
· Displacement as a Safety Measure. Evacuation of endangered population from District Hunza and Gilgit has been completed. Their belongings are intact and safe, however the damage can only be ascertained after the overflow of water from the lake. Details of registered IDPs is as follows:-

· Kohistan District. District Administration Kohistan has evacuated a total of 1250 families (12381 individuals), 9 x camps have been established to look after them. </td> <td width="432">
TROPICAL CYCLONE “PHET”
Ø Backdrop. On 31 May 2010, tropical depression in Central Arabian Sea resulted into formation of tropical cyclone “PHET”. “PHET” struck Northeast tip of Oman coast last night and now lies over coastal areas of Oman and is expected to approach Pakistan coastal areas on Saturday evening and landfall on Sunday with associated storm surge.
Ø Effects o Strong Wind. Strong wind (up to 100 km/ hr) is expected in the coastal areas on Saturday and Sunday.
o Heavy Rains. Wide spread rainfall with isolated heavy to very heavy falls accompanied by strong gusty winds are likely in Balochistan coastal areas between Friday to Monday and in Sindh between Saturday to Tuesday.
o Urban / Flash Floods. Heavy rains may cause urban / flash flooding in Balochistan and Sindh including Karachi.
o Surge. Due to surge effects (waves up to 3-5 Meters high) Karachi city (areas near the coast) may experience inundation.
Ø Probable Affected Areas o Balochistan. Coastal areas of Balochistan including (Jiwani, Gwadar, Pasni, Ormara and Sonmiani) are prone to Flash Flooding.
o Sindh. District Thatta and Badin are prone to Heavy rains where as District Karachi including creek areas is prone to urban flooding.
Ø Response o NDMA Cyclone Contingency Plan (08) has been operationalized. All relevant departments (i.e. PDMAs, DDMA of concerned districts) have taken requisite measures to avoid any loss of life / minimize damage to property.
o All fishermen have been advised not to venture in open sea till further orders and those in sea are being evacuated by Pakistan Navy and Maritime Security Agency.
o City District Govt Karachi has been directed to take all precautionary measures (including removal of dangerous bill boards, loose wiring etc) to avoid loss of life / property.
o Pakistan Army, PAF, Sindh Rangers and FC Balochistan have been put on standby for action in aid of civil power in case of any unforeseen.
o District Emergency Operation Centres have been activated of threatened districts, they have been directed to activate and take all necessary measures as per district contingency plans.
o Irrigation authority has been directed to reduce inflow in irrigation system.
o International Humanitarian / UN agencies including WFP, WHO and UNICEF have been requested to assist concerned authorities/ departments of Sindh and Balochistan.
