Attabad: FWO blocking spillway of the dammed river

Gilgit – Frontier Works Organization is currently working on spillway of the dammed Hunza River. The spillway is being blocked to stop the flow of water, to help the excavation machines in removal of the landslide debris.
The excavation work will help bring the water level further down, reducing risk to the upstream villages.
The FWO is likely to blast the temporary blockade towards the end of April.

					 				 					Gilgit, February 16: The portion of Karakoram Highway destroyed  due to the damming of Hunza River will be completed in the year 2014.

Seven tunnels, five bridges and a 17 kilometer stretch of the KKH will be constructed in Gojal Valley as part of the project. This was stated by Mr. Lee, an official of the China Roads and Bridges Corproation. He further said that three of the tunnels will be constructed this year while work on the remaining two will be completed in 2014.
It is pertinent to note that the same company has been working on the KKH repair and expansion project since 2007.
The expansion and repair project from Khunjerav to Thakot had to be completed in 2013, according to initial plans. However, the project was delayed due to floods and the Attabad landslide disaster that struck in January 2010.

Our Correspondent Gilgit, April 2: The ground breaking ceremony of Naltar Chair Lift Project was performed by Air Marshal Farhat Hussain Khan today at Naltar, the globally renowned ski resort, where ski championship tournaments are held annually under the auspices of Pakistan Air Force and Pakistan Ski Federation. According to details shared by the Chief Secretary, the ambitious chairlift project will cover an area of 1.41 KM of slope, supported by 16 pillars. The highest point of the chairlift will be at around 3453 meters, the base being at 2889 meters. The total rise and fall will be around 584 meters. Speaking at the occasion, Air Marshal Farahat Hussain Khan said that it will turned into a world class skier resort, within one year. Machinery required for completion of the project is being imported from Switzerland in the month of June, 2013. Later, the Air Marshal met Chief Minister Syed Mehdi Shah at his office and the two leaders expressed resolve to make Gilgit-Baltistan an attractive spot for national and international tourists. The project is likely to cost around 31.90 million rupees and it will be completed by June next year.

PT ReportHunza, December 9: A feasibility report for construction of a 20 Mega Watt power plant near the spillway of thedammed Hunza River is being presented within a couple of days. The feasibility reports is being prepared on the instructions of Prime Minister Mian Muhammad NawazSharif, who recently made an aerial visit to the disaster hit region.The Power and Works Department has been tasked to complete the initial feasibility study.It is pertinent to note that several NGOs and social figures in the past have demanded utilization of the stored water in the dammed Hunza River.However, there have also been uncertainties about the sustainability of any major construction near the landslide debris.

btw, is it possible to drive to Kashgar on a 1300cc FWD car? must be hell of an experience ^_^
