Agreed 100%, the newer models seem to have solved the injectors problem of handling the high sulphur content in the diesel here. The 1KZ turbo certainly has a kick to it, not to mention the light weight of the Hilux itself weighing in at a athletic 1490kg only! It feels light on its feet for sure.
Adding the intercooler is definitely on the bucket list.
Reliability as you mentioned is unquestionable. I remember an episode of the red Hilux that was tested to the max by Jeremy Clarkson on Top Gear, a must watch episode for all. That says it all about the Hilux.
