and this only holds good for those cars whose chassis and body can be separated and the chassis number is on the chassis not body......
if car is 1976 crown and someone wants to mount 1992 model body.....its fine its leagle as per court order.....

which says since body can be repaired and altered any time if the orignal chassis number is not tempered..

there is a way to make this story legal

as anil has told above

only tampering the chasis is not legal

this is easy to do on

mercedes, crown, cressida, hilux, land crusiers, pajero

and this also has an international law

cuz many cars are built on each others chasis

like hummer on GMC chasis
mini on rovers/fiat chasis
vauxhall on OPEL chasis

and many many more examples

85-6 body can't be changed

Pajero can be changed but it depends that for how much you get the other body....likely places to get the body are Quetta, Peshawar, Jamroad

My observation:

Same model same vehicle body swap is not an issue. Body change is usually done to make the old model new. For example LC 90-97 have same chassis, if you put 2000 body on 1990 chasis, that is real issue, same applies to other makes.

I too heard there is a judgement from supremecourt where old body was replaced by new model body and customs had impounded that vehicle but court ordered release of vehicle. I would be very much interested if someone have copy of judgement.

I don't think 3 door's frame could be swaped with a 5 door's bosy. 3 door is calles short wheel base (SWB) and 5 door is called long wheel base (LWB). In summary SWB have small chassis/frame so it can not take 5 door body.

No idea bout cost but think about couple of hundred thousand.

Yes Body change is Legal if same shape/year is changed and no tampering with the frame/chassis.
I have done it , but wouldn't recommend it to others...
