The ECU retards the ignition timing and also enriches the A-F ratio, both of which will result in loss of power and efficiency; this might not be detectable in ordinary driving but should be clearly detectable in performance driving. Also loss of efficiency will mean you are wasting fuel.
The non-uniform pressure distribution due to pre-ignition causes shock waves which will gradually damage internal parts. This is due to the nature of chemical reactions which take place during pre-ignition. Google ''knock damaged pistons'' in image search and see the effects yourself.
And yes modern engines can cope very well with high compression / low octane issue compared to older engines; even the combustion chamber designs have changed to minimize knock.

All those changes you mention are no more than 3% of the norm and easy for the ECU to adjust to with 93 RON E10. You would be hard pressed to detect any changes in ordinary driving.

Actually in my car, if I don't put Shell HOBC (97 RON) and run it on Premium unleaded (probably 90 RON), the knocking is just too much to bear. Maybe this is because the ECU cannot cope with such a huge gap in required (98) RON and the RON it is forced to operate on. The engine compression ratio is 11:1 which is quite high (given that even your LS2 corvette operates on 10.9:1 ratio (assuming it actually is LS2).

How sure are you that you are indeed getting the RON in your tank that is being claimed? The main problem in Pakistan is the dishonesty at the pump.

I only vaguely know that oil and gas regulatory authority labels HOBC as 97 RON (read somewhere in a press release). The only way to actually find out is to investigate using analytic techniques which brings us back to the OP's dilemma; we don't trust most businesses in Pakistan but given the dearth of objective data and criterion; we cannot be sure of the quality of the products where it is difficult to judge their quality without proper technique and instruments.

I would have liked your post if you in turn had given any facts. I wrote to PSO and they confirmed that the standard set by our government is 1% Sulphur content ceiling in Diesel. This level is way above what is recommended for common rail Diesel engines.

Even government published a report saying PSO fuel is not up to the mark.
Normally , petrol station owners save 1-2 rs pee liter but to make it more they do some mixing and save 15-20 rs per liter , destroying our cars. Most fuel pump owners do this.

That may be. But Attock Oil is now on track to provide 0.05% Sulfur content diesel from December 2015.

Quality of commercial high speed diesel and its environmental impact. If the maximum allowable content of sulfur is 1%, it doesn't mean that oil refiners are making it. Even PSO HDEO had an average content of 0.354%, the highest of all the samples tested, and this was back in March 2012. Parco and Shell had the lowest content of all the samples tested, 0.265%.

I hope our diesel in the near future will be ULSD as most of the diesel truck is Euro 2 now, our Diesel standard is still Euro 0

,Apparently PARCO and Attock are now producing Euro II compliant HSD, at least according to newspapers. What you get at your local pump is not guaranteed because imported diesel may or may not be compliant and who know which tanker filled your pump that week.

You singled out bad fuel as the cause of knocking problems. If you tested several cars, of the same model, in equally good tune, similar mileage, in the same environment and weather,and from the same petrol pumps, your statement would hold some weight. As it stands however, it is a very wild and inaccurate assumption with no empirical data to back it up.
