Not sure what you mean by Italian Bikes are not marketed properly - anyone heard of Piaggio or Vespa...
Piaggio owns Aprilia & Moto Guzzi. Ducati have a huge market in Europe and also the US & Canada, as well as Japan, Australia, etc. They just don't make small bikes that are suitable for the South East Asian markets.
Technology wise, I'd buy a European bike - Italian, German or Austrian over a Jap made bike anyday. I've had bmw's for a number of years now and they've had abs and traction control way ahead of any jap manf's.
My current bikes have abs, traction control, tyre pressure monitors, shaft drive, telelever suspension, electronically adjustable suspension and much, much more.
Aprilia have some really cool machines out like the RSV4, BMW are just launching the S1000RR and the new R1200GS (now the highest selling big trail bike ever made), Piaggio are releasing their hybrid electric mp3, Ducati have their new Monster range as well as the really cool Streetfighter.
In most of the world, European bikes are thought to be more prestigious than any jap bike.
BMW's hold their value way better than any jap bike here in Europe, as do Ducati's.
