I'm suffering from a Cornea related eye-disease called Keratoconus for quite long time.
Keratoconus in lay-man defination means shrinkage of cornea outer-ring that allows cornea to deshape (cone-shape) which in result disturbs the focus of eye and vision get blurred or can say very minute double-image / multiple-image. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Keratoconus
This disease is normally bilateral, means it occurs in both eyes, sometimes appear simultanously in both eyes and sometimes one after the other. Normally, it attacks in young age (b/w 18 to 30 yrs)
I'm also suffering this for both eyes, demage to my right eye is more as compared to left eye (i.e. just started to drop vision)
Symptoms:
- Double Imaging / Multiple Imaging (Not like that u start seeing two faces of ppl or two cars instead of one, infact its minute like reading u'll notice double imaged letters
- Reduced Night Vision
- Abnormal Eye-Watering
- Strain in eye with continous use of TV / Computer, night drive etc.
- Extreme Case: A scar starts developing around the cornea
Treatment:
If diagnosed at early stage, use of spectacles and soft lens will hold further progression
In advanced stage, spectacles / lens don't work and there are only following 2 options practiced today:
1) Corneal Transplant: i.e. Replacing your cornea with a donor cornea.
This is very complex procedure. Chance of success is around 70% to 80% and transplant life is max 15 to 20 years, means after that you'll have to revise the surgery.
2) C3R / Cross-Linking Treatment: This is most commonly used these days all over the world to treat keratoconus. This treatment doesnot gives any improvement to the damage done however it esures that furhter progression of disease is stopped.
Treatment is divided in following steps:
a. Cleaning of eye with some medicines
b. Surgeon uplifts the top-most epithilium layer of cornea after using some drops (its not much painfull)
c. Two type of protien drops are poured into the eye for 30 minutes. (3 drops per 30 seconds)
d. Same drops are poured for another 30 minutes under UV-Rays
e. Soft Contact Bandage-Lens is placed in operated eye
f. 5 to 7 days bed rest
g. Removal of Bandage-Lens after 5 to 7 days rest.
h.30 to 45 days to heal-up cornea / epithilium
i. 4 to 6 months study of cornea / results by doctor.
j. Recommendation of hard contact lens to improve vision.
I'd gone for c3r treatment 10 days ago for my right-eye. I was on complete bed rest for 05 days, during that time I was not allowed to do anything, no TV, no Pakwheels, no nothing :S
First 12 hours after treatment are deadly painfull. I just didn't screamed with pain and did everything else to bear the pain, even pain-killer don't work much for 01st 12 hours :(, afterwards pain is reduced and bearable.
Pain stays for couple of days, till the removal of bandage lens. Later-on it pains if you put stress on eye, like by watching tv etc. However, that is cured by using few drops.
Alhamdullilah, my treatment went fine so far
Plz do pray that it goes well onwards as-well and I get a proper HCL (hard contact lens) so that my R/E vision gets fine. After this satisfaction my doctor will start treating my Left-Eye (i.e. just began to lose vision with same disease)
+ Now using Hard Contanct Lense (HCL) Rose-K, for Right-Eye
+ Also done with C3R (Collagen Crosslinking) for Left Eye in Apr'2011 from dubai.
Remeber me in your prayers!
And anyone suffering from Keratoconus, must go for immediate treatments. Don't delay it.
Stay Blessed!
