My car is also not burning any oil but there was a major problem with the pick of the car. It used to die when accelerator was pushed with a heavy foot. It used to gain speed very very slowly with jerks. I knew this that engine compression might not be perfect but this is something else, as I got my car's engine overhauled twice but this was not the condition of engine before overhaul.
So asked the mechanic to find the fault. He made several attempts to resolve the problem and took 3/4 test drives and finally resolved it. According to him, upto a certain amount of timing can be adjusted from the distributor, but if the required setting can not be achieved from distributor side, then the timing belt is moved by one or two points. I am not sure about the exact gap he set on intake and exhaust valves.
