The 70 Series I own is the most under-rated, and yet, probably the most capable of all of my cars. It's an FZJ79 - the LWB version pickup - and I would like to offer an alternative view of the vehicle from some of the Gurus who have placed the 70 Series a notch below the Hilux / Vigo.
This 70 Series pickup comes with a 1FZ-FE engine (4.5L EFi) and a 5 speed manual transmission. Front + rear diff locks, the usual low and high range 4WD, power steering, power windows, power mirrors, all round discs, coil sprung suspension, and what not. For motorway drives it's an impeccably well-behaved car; and I've clocked it doing +160 km/hr, easy, on more occasions than I can count. Grip, grunt, acceleration and stability are top class. When it comes to off-road capabilities, not only have I driven this car over some fairly hair-raising routes, I've driven the same model cars during the course of my service in some of the most arduous terrain in the country. Let me reassure you, if there are very many cars that perform better off-road, I'd certainly like to see them!
I do know that the Vigo is a very competent car, too...and has performed splendidly as a rally vehicle, weekend warrior, and road-going utility truck. Personally, though? I'd take this particular model of the 70 Series over a Hilux / Vigo, any day of the week. The drug smugglers, gun runners, and an overwhelming majority of people involved in the "trade" of contraband in the border areas of Balochistan and KPK, would tend to agree with me.
