City driving and cold starts are quite rough on an engine. The engine of a well-maintained highway cruiser should last indefinitely; the body will fall apart from rust long before the engine dies.

Sounds like my dad's '03 Cultus. It would have covered ~520k km today if he hadn't got a Civic back in 2010. Right now, the Cultus is sitting at 330k km, and the Civic is at 290k.

It was consuming a lot of oil, so he replaced the valve guides and valve stem seals himself at home. I helped (mostly handed him tools); it was a great learning experience nonetheless.

No wonder it lasted all that time. Salute to your dad for not handing it over to desi mechanics who would say "ring piston" on seeing odo. A proper diagnosis is all that's needed.

Poor engine a engine that never sees redline would be pretty sluged up a over square doesnt give a damn about high revvs

Is Redline necessary? I drive at reAlly low rpm's (1500-2000). But i do drive aggressively i.e gear shifts around 4ooorpm like after every 3-4 days for 2-3 km. hope it works well for engine.

you bet - cold running is worst.

I have seen some taxis in germany - mercedes benz CDI of course, they would only be shut down when pulled into the shop - it was a literal nonstop thing, even refuelling was with engine running, drivers changed on shifts, engine still running.

the engine only shut down when about to be put on service rack - Their mileage and engine hours would make you scratch your head, The highest I recall was at 820,000 kms. The guys told me that they have seen some models with more than 1.2 million kms - and the cars were then sold - not scrapped. lol
