But why are we choosing a mercedes 229.3 oil for his toyota?

All mercedes engines are built a bit looser than toyotas as they have to run under high load at high speeds, they are all heavy oils with a hot viscosity of 14 cst and a ton of tbn for the extra long oil change mb require.

His toyota is not that kind of machine. Its built to putter around town with the leanest possible expense.

We are not choosing 229.3, we are getting it for same price as any api sn, also with all the dust particles not being filtered by cheap air filter (he might not be using oem) and soot from our ww2 diesel trucks which are below the micron levels that oil and air filter can filter good MOFT will be of advantage, and loss of fuel economy negligible another thing 229.3 will usually have tbn around 10 which will be again good for high sulfur petrol that we have, again he wont be sepnding more on 229.3

Extra long ocis are for 229.5 not 229.3

but all 229.3 oils are very heavy - they are all xw40 rated which kill fuel economy of these toyota engines.

so why use that? stick to the API SN, SP 0W20 oil that Toyota specify (its cheap) and change at the recommended intervals (10,000 kms for severe duty) - and keep chugging along.

I think you have it backwards, 229.3 are for cars with FSS which can elongate the oil change interval upto 28,000 kms depending on the driving cycle of the vehicle.

229.5 oils are not FSS and have a shorter service life - and if a 229.5 oil is used in an FSS car then the oil wear system is to be ignored. This is done at all mercedes dealerships (whenever someone rolls in with a dinosaur still using FSS)

Yes, precisely he can choose 0w20 and he can choose 0w40, on the forum though he can know about both

229.3 and 229.5 will have dame interval but with wool filter 229.5 will have long oci, there r more differences too like low noack and higher fuel economy

Btw SHU 5w40 can be used in most cars in pak, moderately priced and might have some gtl mixed in, carries most approvals

can you provide mercedes benz recommendation to back it? Im telling you exactly what MB do when you roll in with your car for a lube service.

The old FSS cars will change the oil life cycle as you add oil and keep on driving on highway, when the same car is used in city where it has more acceleration cycles it will reduce the oil change interval, All those cars take 229.3 oils - if you use 229.5 then you dont follow the FSS and rely on the oil change sticker. (this is why FSS cars oil level sensors are extra expensive - they actually measure oil quality too)

with 229.5 oils you set it with service assyst and its loosely based on fuel used and the odometer read. - If a dealership uses a 229.3 oil in a 229.5 car it doesnt matter much except for it being slightly harsh on the AFR sensors, but most dont as 229.3 oils are a bit pricey than 229.5 oils.

if we add a name behind it - it will become something like "asim teli"

which again is a problem because some gujrati speaking family name is actually "teli" - which then becomes an identity issue.

but why? when the required lube is 0w20 or 5w30 depending on year. Both of these viscosity ratings are cheap and work for best service life of vehicle with best economy.

Btw how does FSS measure oil quality, can it measure tbn, contamination etc too?

it uses capacitance.

They also mention to choose the lightest spec accordingly. Meaning you can choose to use 20W50 if you have absolutely nothing else available.

Yeah they also say use heavier viscosity if u tow or high speed driving etc, i guess oil viscosities and ocis will always be the most debated topics in automotive and everybody will have their own choices and reasonings
