Manual vs. Automatic transmission in Pakistan

To downshift, you have to increase rphm(press acct.) by 300. That's how it is done in heavy duty diesel engines. Most of drivers here shift 10 or 13 speed transmission without clutch to save it. I know it because I have flatbed transport compnay here.
I have a automatic trcuk also(2007 columbia with 13 speed Eaton fuller transmission). I bought it because the warranty on its transmission is upto 1.2 M km vs 800k km. it starts with 1 gear and goes upto 13. the good feature about it is that it skips 4,5 gears if there is no load on the engine. there is a manual mode also like triptronic but it will overide any misuse of transmission.
Automatic tansmissions are very durable as long as transmission filter and oil is replaced on time. Transmissions made by Toyota honda and Gm are the most reliable in the world.

hmmm, well actually both of them are good in their own respective ways, it totally depends upon the persons own private preference...

You can have fun on automatic as well, lumina, caprice ss...etc etc

As far as pakistan is concerned, their should be no doubt, manual is much better. Some people may buy auto for their convinience, but frankly speaking, the roads, the fuel prices, and the cost and spare-parts and availibilty of mechanics in case something goes wrong with auto might proove to be a hell for the owner.

Personal preference goes long way. I have tried keeping two different Lexus sedans (at different times) as they are very reliable: A 1999 GS400 and a 2002 LS430 and have to sell both in part due to the fact that both only comes with automatic and after driving them for 2 or 3 months, i started longing for the feel of manual. The GS400 had the tiptronic style up and downshift buttons on steering still it was not good enough... beside the way lexus implemented it was that it controls the top gear allowed thus - just like you would select using the auto-transmission selector stick. I bought a 6-speed 2003 Maxima after selling the GS400 and was happy with it initially... until i was bothered too much by the torque steer of its FWD setup I finally found solace in a cute little Miata!

i have an auto and manual car.got stuck in traffic with my manual car and realised what blessing my auto transmission car is....
i am so used to auto i skip gear in manual because of laziness.rev hard in 2nd and shift to 4th. or rev hard in 3rd and put it in the 5th

A/T vs M/T ?.. you are talking about a country where people buy car by checking its price and looks and not its specs and technology..

they are hard working people.. they dont use calculator for calculations but their brains..

Haceeb, I asked because some relatives back in Pak. ask me whether to get an Auto or manual and it made me wonder if Auto was a choice that our people are considering seriously. But having read all the comments here it was clear to me that mostly people want it because of the traffic. I remember driving through Sadar in mid-90s during rush hour and thought it was bad. From what I have heard, its even worse now with too many cars on the road. Looks like you can't really "enjoy" a manual transmission, it has become more of a chore.

Our people have always shown great flexibility in adapting so i hope they do car-pooling instead of what we see here in US: A single person driving a HUGE Suburban or Tahoe to work! And there are tons of these guys/ladies on the road

i hav got a tiptronic vehicle..and i hav xperienced it 2 b the best..
true manual haz true joy..esp when u r drivin fast..but this cumez wid true strain on ur leg when it cumz 2 hectic timez or rushy bumper 2 bumper traffic...
tiptronic givz u a special advantage in auto carz while going downhill..
so in my veiw..manual iz fun but gets painfull in rushy hourz..u can drive manual occasionally..
but wen u hav a daily drive of about a 100kmz..like i do..i think tiptonic vehicles solve quite much of a problem..giving u part of fun wid either type of transmission

well both r good choices,but depends upon density of traffic on the roads. Auto is good within city where we have to change the gear frequently.I have manual i say "kia bakwas hay bar bar klach tha pair rahko phir gear lao,gaddi auto hovye taa zindgi asan hovye"
some times we have to go to multan from isb ,i feel if had automatic car n car gear box stuck at that place where i couldnt find a good machanic to troubleshot it "jugar auto nal ta lag nai sakdi bai".then ans is manual.Actually in Pakistan we dont have expert mechanic except from big cities like khi,lhr.
I wish we have good mechanic in small cities like sahival,vehari,khanival...etc so that i can enjoy with automatic.
