a friend has a red one in ISB which he drives daily. it's a typeS and it has been trouble free from day 1. it's all how to condition and maintainance. most RX-8s were "drifted" daily and not maintained which lead to them breaking down (will happen to any abused car). BTW many modern cars require top-ups, from the RX-8 all the way to the cayenne turbo.
my friend imports anything and everythign his car needs and i've never heard one complaint from him since he bought it.
yes you are right that there are fewer and fewer RX-8s in ISB,.. mainly because the bachas who had them have crashed them or blown thier motors. the few that are left are in pretty good condition.
As for calling a car a failure. do note that the renesis engine won multiple awards for it's design etc, unfortunately it was too complicated for our local "ustaads" who are mentally still in the stone age. here if it isn't a corolla, it's a flop. but we must look at the big picture and realize that local ustaads are not the final word when it comes to international market cars. infact i think these idiots shouldn't even have a say.
