Mercedes Benz differential oil periodic change?

I am hearing some goonj like Ko’n Ko’n Ko’n Ko’n Ko’n from my car since last 3~4 days. It only comes from speed 45Km/h to 75Km/h. It doesn’t make any sound before and after this speed range.

Have checked the front wheel bearing to two different mechanics and they confirmed these are OK and its not wheel bearing noise. Because if it, then it has to be continous even at the slow, mid and high speeds.

Third mechanic advised me to check the differential oil. I said OK but did not let him open it yet. However this thread is so helpful indeed. So i want to discuss my situation.

Toyota Crown
JZS143R
3.0L, 2JZGE I6
24V, DOHC EFI
RWD, AT

Am having this car like 6 months and have not changed the gear oil because its color is still slightly red.

From ZIC Oil guide, they recommend ZIC G-5, 80W-90 Gear oil, TO USE IN DIFFERENTIAL.

I checked and availability of this oil is rare. And not sure either that its (ZIC G-5, 80w-90 gear oil) suitable oil for it or not?
Hence I need your guidance here plz.

Gl5 is also available from Toyota dealerships in appropriate visocities there are two I think. It's a good oil

Also make sure your car doesn't have LSD as that requires different oil but lsd oil is also available at Toyota dealership.

to know what kind of type my car has, i will take the picture and will post it here soon.

(Purpose of discussing this point at length here is self learning with help of Seniors and feeding the correct fluid).

the type of LSD doesn't effect the oil it takes, all LSDs just need a friction modifier to work. if your car has a LSD it may be marked on the differential with these letters or check the build sheet if you have it, alternatively get one tyre on grass and tyre on road and try accelerating hard, if the grass tyre spins but the road tyre does not the you dont have a LSD. alternatively jack up the rear wheels together and try rotating the tyre by hand in one direction and watch the other tyre, if they both rotate in same directions then you have a LSD, if they rotate in opposite directions then you dont

most probably you wont have it.

check the complete driveshaft on that crown and recheck the wheel bearings correctly, Bad flexdiscs on the driveshaft will cause a rythmic rumble. You may also need to swap the tires back to front to see if the noise follows the tire.

The diff oil in your car is specced for SAE 90 mineral gear oil, its very heavy gear oil and honestly works best in toyota diffys. I dont think your crown would have the LSD rearin it.

not enough data to help, are you sure the noise goes away when under 45 or above 75, or does it just get mixed up in the 'surrounding' noise?

What is the 'area' of generation of that noise? front / rear? FR, FL, RR, RL?

Here are the updates.
Mechanic suggested to swap the front tires firstly. So he shifted left front wheel to right side and Right front Wheel to left side.
The noise is down. But its still there. Me & my mechanic, are trying to figure out the origin of that noise. But till yet couldn’t. because this noise does not come below 45 and perhaps got mixed with other engine noises after 75 Km/h (as Syncview said).

Differntial oil was just checked and it was good (upto the bolt) and mechanic said very much find yet and can be good upto 10K km more. However I took couple of its pictures as below.

Another mechanic says this noise is being generated from the fan. Because its fan has got some play in it and Engine’s RPMs are directly proportional to Fan’s RPMs. So at the certain speed the fan start making noise. I am just considering the possibilities of it.

the cooling fan rpm is not directly proportional to the engine rpm - its got a clutch on it and it only works when it gets hot, otherwise the fan is actually just freewheeling (quiet) - if your fan has any play in it and is actually directly running equal to engine rpm then immediately replace the fan clutch as the fan will explode and take out your radiator and cook the engine.

As mentioned - rythmic rumble can be from tires and also wheel bearings. Even with differential bearings.

Are the rear axles sloppy? - try turning them and feel for clunking

My car has only one fan and its big.
At idle state, if we increase the engine RPMs, the fan?s RPMs increases proportionally.
I will get the picture.

i already posted above the pictures of rear axles / differential.

yes I know what a fan looks like on a JZ engine - and Im telling you again, its rpm is not equal to engine rpm. The clutch in the center is what controls it.

If its spinning at engine speed, the clutch is locked/siezed

i found this oil from zic website.

plz check the 3rd one in the given specifications area. I believe this is the same oil you are recommending.

Kinamatic viscosity at 40 Celcius is 142.5

sounds good. Try finding caltex - they sold a nice gear oil in Pakistan.

I called the Caltex distributors that deals with automobile fluids.
They informed now SAE 90 is not available any more. Their new product 80w-90 has already replaced it and its GL-5. Price is Rs. 360/L only (cheaper than others).
Need your approval for this Caltex 80w-90 to go use it as Differential oil for Toyota Crown. Differential pictures already posted earlier in this thread.

yup - its good, smelly as hell though

did you test the engine fan? if its running at engine rpm you are at 80% risk of it blowing apart at high rpm and you will be very sorry when that happens.
