Mercedes E230 Transmission stuck in 2nd gear limp mode

One more thing, you mentioned the wiring was damaged from a connector. what is the condition of the 13 pin connector on the transmission, I have come across some strange cases of the wiring connector going bad causing lost contact to the pins (not the bushing but the connector itself - its available as a spare from mercedes) - the bushing set screw can break the electrics plate of the trans if the person doing the work is not careful - the max torque for that screw is about 22 in/lb or about 3 nm. Very very low. I always slather assembly lube on the O rings - align it very gently and push it home - it seats firmly - then I tighten that screw gently. I have seen some mechanics using that screw to pull the connector in :o

if you get the target gear not achieved error then it must also be logging the run report, you can also test the shift parameters from star - see what amount of torque the gearbox is handling.

btw - how smooth are the gearshifts - the car should accelerate like a passenger aircraft ready to take-off, meaning the shifts should be seamless and very strong. I beleive you need to check the valve body and replace the overlap valves, 2-3 pressure spring and test the solenoids (they are ratcheting type) - and btw what ATF are you using?

I will ask the mechanic about the run report. I am currently using Meguin ATF.

The diagnostics is now giving error of the valve body. although we have serviced it many times it is still not working.

Valve body new is not available. and people who have an old one are only willing to sell the whole gearbox.

the valve body has a repair kit available made by sonnax for about USD 70/- which includes updated overlap valves with O rings, new 2-3 shift spring and some other O rings. The solenoids are sold separately.

The valve body in a 722.6 is not very complex as all shifting and pressure control is done via solenoids. The old mechanical ones were a giant jigsaw puzzle.
