Correct explanation. There will be fitment issues for vehicles other than Hiace van.

When I argued with the shopkeeper on this, he replied that it would fit in FJ/BJ7x because of their larger engine bays. According to him, for Prado & Surf owners he would remove the intercooler before selling.

Price of this engine variant was much less than regular one.

Thanks for the informative posts and tips. I have a similar vehicle to yours, a Prado 93 model, 3 Door KZJ71.

I've had it serviced with all belts and fluids changed - however the only issue pending is the rear diff. actuator motor that locks the rear diff.
Its siezed up so needs to be replaced or rebuilt, any tips on where to source working used replacements or where to get it repaired?

Good to know that you also own a 70 series.

I think rear e locker motor is serviceable in your case. That should be the first priority because used replacement parts are quite expensive these days.

I live in twin cities, and can guide you accordingly.

Decided to change the diff ratio from 4.88 to 4.1 for comfortably achieving motorway speeds and to avoid high RPMs.

First, rear differential was changed.

The existing diff:

Then, the front diff was re - geared with ring and pinion replacement. The flange and flange seal were also changed. This re - gearing was done by using new parts (except for flange, which wasn't available as a new part).

Front diff taken off.

Crown wheel taken out.

Pinion taken out of the diff.

New ring and pinion:

New crown wheel fitted in.

Diff was then re assembled with other parts. They used a self made structure to fit the flange and adjust backlash, manually.

Whilst front diff was being replaced we found out that diff fluid was leaking out of the tube in small quantities from right side. Culprit was the inner axle seal. So it had to be taken care of.

When the mechanic reached ball cavity axle bearings were also seen to be worn out. So both were replaced on both sides along with axle seals.

What was the result of changing ratio. How was the fuel economy after ratio change. Was new crown wheel and pinion chinese. And from where sourced.
