People would rather break dance in traffic or get crushed under wheels rather than taking the labour of climbing 40 stairs. The advantage of taking the pedestrian flyover is that you can go up, across and down at your own pace, stalling for breath where you'd like to.
@cracked, the headroom is there in the first place for any unexpected thing. I advocate the auntie should be legally penalized for violating others' right of way (if drivers are not taking their cars up the pedestrian bridge for U-turn then why are pedestrians using car's pavement for crossing?) you still have to be cautious for your own sake.
Also, driving slow or installing speed breakers is not a solution. There are cars or other motorized vehicles in the first place because of the need for speed. Otherwise people may as well walk to destination.
