The (A) VTEC that Wasn't to be.
It was close to 15 years ago this year that Honda announced their 'next-generation" VTEC engine for the K series.
ADVANCED VTEC (A-VTEC). with continuously variable valve lift and timing control with the continuously variable phase control of VTC, basically i-VTEC on steroids.
it also was meant to have a variable length intake manifold (like BMW), it would have the low end power of an RBB intake manifold with the top end power gains of an RBC intake manifold.
Together you're probably looking at an serious 4 cyl engine that can make 225 to 240 HP out of the factory (crank). So we would've been looking at close to 100hp per litre (or: F20C kind of numbers).
I speculate those numbers given there's always been around a 30kw odd difference between Honda V6 and 4 cylinder throughout the years (8th gen J35 had 202kw).
THIS was meant to be the engine in the CU2 along with a new 6 speed auto, both were ready by 2007.
Honda actually said at the time (2006) this engine would come out within 3 years in the (JDM) Accord, ie: the CU2.
....Then the GFC hit in 2008 and Honda scrapped it all up...
We ended up with 8th Gen Accords, a half arsed stop gap effort, by 2011 it was all over, CVT came in along with "Earth Dreams" line of Honda engines.
