I basically want to improve my indoor / low-light (normal fluorescent) portrait photography. What will be more helpful? (i) Canon 430EX II Flash for ~26k (ii) 50mm/f1.8 for ~10k (iii) 50mm/f1.4 for 25k "used" or (iv) Flash + 50/1.8 for ~35k

i) would be easiest, bounce the flash to a white wall, and get good soft light all around, or use off camera, using 600D built in wireless flash control, and go creative.

ii) will give you more natural light shooting opportunities, shallow depth of field, for portraits this would also be good

iii) forget it

iv) ultimately, u will end up here.

I bought my Canon 40D+17-85 some 18 months ago. I used it very carefully and the camera is in a very good condition, shutter actuation should be around 2000. How much can I get if I sell it in Pakistan? Any idea friends?

I will go for 50mm 1,4 and 25,000 is a very good price, they are normally a bit more expensive. 50mm 1,4 is my favourite lens among the all non-L lenses. Be sure that it is free of dust and fungus, no scratches and the general condition should be good. Put the lens on your camera and take some photos if your neighbour allows you.

For the moon shots. Zoom the lens to the full and lessen the EV

For the moon, Use Manual settings.
ISO 800
No Flash
Shutter will go slow at 2 seconds or so.
And Yes, adjust focal point to center only.

this is what i did to capture the moon:
Shutter Speed: 1/20 sec.
F-number: F/5.0
Optical zoom: 15x
ISO 80

600D got the digital zoom feature in video; and when it does it; its not degrading the pixels; as movie frame size is much smaller than its sensor so it does the cropping...

I recorded the moon /w digital zoom @ 135mm; and it was great; but file size is "huge" I forgot to set the movie size properly. Tomorrow, I will record the movie again insha-Allah!

What's new in Lightroom v3 is the must watch video. The presentor has touched all the important features of the software in half an hour very nicely. I am loving this tool....and a special thanks to fellow Pak Wheeler

The lens correction tool is fantastic

You can paint the annoying / unwanted objects in background using the brush tool. To select the color from image; just drag the white box from color palette to the image and it will automatically reposition itself in the palette.

This is what I was trying to do; blur out the towel hanging on the door handle in the background; but back then I could not figure out how to select the color from the image (Page 4 - Lightroom - Initial Testing)

Option (ii) will be the best. Not much money spent with a great large aperture prime.

Checked the 50mm/1.4 lens yesterday; there were signs of heavy use; he might had bought it from some road side studio or something. The back cover was missing and there was dust there. I have dropped this option.

I have decided to follow Momin Bh suggestion to go with the cheapest option The shop from where I bought the camera is not giving me good rate. I cannt give him 1k more every time :-# On the weekend I have to go to Lahore; will try to go one day earlier in evening and visit Chamberlain Road and pick 50mm/f1.8 and the camera bag insha-Allah.

You are right that I will end up eventually buying the flash Shoping for flash is in the list; there are just two hurdles right now; (a) I dont have the budget this month and (b) I am confused between 430EX-II and the new 320EX. 320EX features a LED for video recording (its not super important for me) and has wireless remote button that can be used to activate the camera. Its a nifty feature I guess; place the camera on tripod and set things up and get multiple snaps by moving around the flash...430EX-II will definitely give more light; question is does 320EX gives sufficient light in usual indoor / fluorescent situations.

D5100 is a very nice camera; and on paper its better than 600D and has better value for money.

For some weird reasons to me images on the internet taken from 550D/600D striked more than D5000/D5100. Its purely a subjective opinion. Yes, D5100 /w 18-55 is 67k. If you replace its 18-55 with 18-105 or something like that; it becomes ~87k (Remaining difference less than 10k). The only issue with this was that D5100 comes only in 18-55 kit and you have to trade your kit lens with something else. If you know the shopkeeper very well...this is great....it was not in my case; this was my first camera purchase from local market and it was my first visit to Nisbat Road. I was already inclined towards Canon and 600D comes in three kits and therefore this 18-135 kit striked me more.
