Yes you can fix the speedometer as a DIY. Difficulty factor intermediate Id say.
Im always glad to see people who themselves work on thier cars. It changes your relationship with the machine.
What you would need:
-
Good working speedometer....
I can bet the original on your car is in good shape. They are robust units and unless one really goes out of the way to screw them up, one cannot.
A simple test to see if the speedo does work: carefully put a matchstick rear end into the aperture for the speedo cable and spin counterclockwise. Do it carefully and make sure you dont break the match inside. Ask a friend to simultaneously see whether the needle jumps a little.
A good speedo cable
If its missing on your car, you can buy a new one from Cheap Autos at Plaza or get a good second hand one from Shershah. I recommend a new one as the old would need careful inspection and a good clean. New one should cost you four to five hundred rupees.
If there is an old one on your car check to see if its broken.
Sometimes the cable can be pushed down towards the tire side and lose contact with the speedo side. Needs a simple pull with a needle nose pliers. I wish I had pics to explain.
- A good left hand side wheel centre bearing dust cap.
This has a square hole in the centre for the speedo cable to fit into. Sometimes this hole becomes rounded. Time for a new cap then. New caps were available at Cheap Autos recently. Price should be between a hundred and two hundred rupees.
Fitting the cable is straightforward. I replaced the one on my 68 a couple of days ago....wish I had pics to explain the process here.....greay hands...Doh!!
Do snap some pics of the speedo from both front and back and of the cable (if its there) plus a closeup of the Left front tire and post here.
Best of luck.
