@toofast:
Yes, Camry does 27mpg on hwy in the US. City mileage is somewhat like 23mpg. That translates to 9.7 km/L in city. HOWEVER, that is NOT what it will give you here in Pakistan!!! Why?
1) Because the petrol is too milaawatee here. What you call "super" here is not really 87 octane---more or less a nice blend of kerosene oil and petrol. Only Allah knows what the real octane of the petrol is here in Pakistan. They do it to increase their profits.
2) When I was in Tulsa Okalahoma and Tampa Florida, my median speed within cities was around 45 - 50 mph. That is around 72 km/h. The median speed here in Islamabad is somehere between 30-35 km/h. That translates to 21 mph! So your car is mostly in 2nd gear and occasionally reaches teh 3rd gear. Due to this reason the Camry here in Pakistan will give you 16 mpg and a typical 1.6L Honda Civic with automatic transmission will give you around 19mpg!!!! Now this is the kind of mileage that a V8 and a V6 engine will give you respectively in the US!
When I was in the US, my 1998 4.4L BMW 540i 6 speed used to give me 15 mpg (Tampa). My 1997 Accord was around 23 mpg (Tulsa) and my 2001 2.0L I4 RAV4 was around 21mpg (Tampa)
Yes its hard to believe but here in Pakistan the 2.4 I4 Camry will give you what a 4.4L V8 will give in you the US!
On hwy, our 2002 1.6L automatic Civic does 12.5 km/L. That is around 29.5 mpg---still not as good as it is in the US.
So bottom line....its not just the speed in city driving but also the poor petrol quality that is responsible for giving you poor economy in Pakistan.
