Take any modern car and drive it at 40-60km/hr continuously on a smooth surface (try this on motorway M2). Make sure the wheels are all aligned and balanced and make sure the tires are not very high rolling resistance. You'll be surprised how efficient modern cars are. I get ~25km/l on honda city 1300cc (2010 model). Mira being smaller should do better.
It's varying speed and stop and go driving that takes away the economy. It is because these manual and auto transmissions are not very efficient while speeds vary. A CVT does a significantly better job. I think CVTs will replace all transmissions very soon (atleast for ordinary road cars).
