I was there from 9-12 Sept 07. The road conditions are good. You can take your car all the way to Jalkhad which is 42km ahead of Naran. Before the quake I could drive from Balakot to Naran in about 2 hours, now it takes a little over 3 hours.

The largest patch of bad roads starts from Balakot and goes right up to Paras. It is a mix of smooth road with several bad patches along the way. The road has been completely destroyed at several places due to landsliding. But you can take your own car, you just have to drive slowly. As far as Shogran goes, I don't really know what the condition of the road is. But someone told me that the Shogran road has been completely destroyed. It is open, but I don't know if you will be able to take your car all the way to Shogran.

Magnificent. I'm sorry that u didn't make to the lake.But I guess you had to pay for the mistake by not hiring horses..
Ppl like us from cities could never coupe-up with life in the mountains. ANyways, better luck next time..:),
One thing i noticed in the snaps is that not many ppl.I mean roads are almost empty and at lake side also there aren't many ppl(tourist) around.
Second thing i wanted to know and if u had any idea is about trout? i actually wanted to try fishing in these areas.

The reason you don't see too many people is because this is the end of the season. Naran was virtually empty. Hotel rents are rock bottom. They ask for Rs.300 per night but you can rent a room for much less than that even. As far as fishing goes, you need to get a permit from Naran for a small fee. You are only allowed one fish per day. The local guide told be many people don't even get one in an entire day. It depends on your luck.

It will take you about 3 hours from Balakot to Naran as I've already mentioned. I have also mentioned the road conditions, please read my previous post. Rain is unpredictable. Snowfall only happens high in the mountains. Although I did encounter a hailstorm on the way to Dudipatsar lake which lasted 15 minutes.

altitude check 3,135m=10,285 feet. Actual height of the lake is 10,500 feet.

Again the error is due to the fact that I didn't calibrate the watch.
